How cheap could you setup a cctv system?

Why:

My mum has a dog, he barks very rarely and usually when he does its only terratorially and even though he gets walked a lot he loves being out in the garden, attached to a lead of course.

About a week ago, in the middle of the night someone came into the garden and cut the lead into three pieces. She had a backup lead and used that, about 48hrs afterwards the second lead was cut up.

She thinks its because there is a very noisy dog around the area and that her dog is being blamed, next door has a lead though its metal though they are totally different dogs, next doors is a little yappy thing and hers is a border collie with a manly bark, much like the noisy one around the area so it makes sense that next doors wasnt touched.

What:

Something that sits in the window, inside and records to its own device. Shes not savvy enough to rig it to her PC, that and if that was the case it'd have to be wirelessly done so a standalone system is best and I'm assuming cheapest.

As its happened in the night, IR would be needed. Enough clarity to pinpoint who it is.

I leave it to you GD and if we catch someone, I'll repay you by shaming them here with footage :)

Something like a Foscam IP IR camera ~£60 (check the bay) + iSpy (free) would work pretty well I imagine.

It seems terrificly cruel to keep a dog, in the garden, on a lead. It should be able to roam free.

Not as cruel as keeping them indoors all day. There are a number of reasons they keep their dog on a lead. Maybe the dog digs holes everywhere, ***** all over the garden or keeps escaping somehow.

borrow a much bigger dog preferably one that is hungry.

dont use a lead and leave it in the garden overnight

sweep up remains of the lead cutter in the morning , problem solved

Don't have a dog then?

If I saw a dog tied up all the time then I'd cut it's lead into bits too.

If they had a problem with the barking then they'd get a snotty letter through the door, cutting the lead up repeatedly without touching the dog clearly implies the problem is with the lead.

Save your money, let the dog roam free and I bet that's the last you'll see of this person.

"Why is he being kept in the garden"
he loves being out in the garden
Its right near the top of the post.

He can jump the gate, he digs under the fences and escapes to the garden behind the garden he's in.

If its warm enough to keep the back door open its left open so he roams in and out, even wipes his feet before he comes in otherwise its kept shut, he's checked on regularly as they both smoke, outside so that works well. He scratches the door when he wants to come back in, doesnt bark.

The lead is just short of the boundries so he has full access to the entire garden.

Although I failed to mention he's kept in over night, its purely for his own entertainment that hes out in the garden. He's walked twice every day.

The lead was cut, in the early hours when no dog was attached to it, he has NEVER been left out all night on his own.

Clearly if thats correct bitslice then the people observing need to pay more attention as short of making him a working dog he gets a lot more excercise than many dogs.

Nobody actually asked why he was in the garden, being attached to a lead was the relevant bit :)

OK, happy dog, but I still can't think of why anyone would cut a lead unless the lead was the issue?

I'd still be tempted to underpin the fences with netting and board above the gate to solve the escape problem, rather than tie him up.

Getting CCTV evidence on a neighbour is opening a can of worms.

Just write a note "Cut my lead, I'll cut you" if they take you to the police then what we're they doing in your backgarden

On Topic: Record it and take it to the police as its trespassing and criminal damage.

I dont understand it either but its got to be that other dog.. or theres something else. From what my mums said before though that other dog is very annoying, barks all night sometimes

messages from my mum:

u wont' believe this we couldn't let the dog out this morning i put him on the lead. someone has cut the dog lead in the garden in 3 places. if people have a problem why don't they say something. there's a dog that barks a lot and it's not basil.

basil is the dogs name

hi guess what they've cut the lead again. it was about 4.15am this morn. i heard basil bark quietly so i went down in the dark. didn't want to let him out on my own. got alan up alan had a look the lead seemed to be going towards the first house on the left the house where the kids kick the ball and have made a hole in the fence. basil was sniffing around there

Looking at the times of the messages it was 4 days between, days have gone quicker than i thought and yes her using "u" instead of "you" annoys me to.

If these people know my mum, which im guessing they don't.. they would know they could just come and speak to her and she'd be fine about it, thats if her dog was the problem of course which shes positive it isnt

This probably hasnt happened before as my brother now lives with me, he used to be up all night and his room is over the backgarden but as he's not there anymore maybe theyve been waiting to do this for a while.

Edit: @Hyburnate - Aye thats going to be the plan, the recording bit at least. I did tell her to search for footprints but she said her partner looked and couldnt see anything, must have not been dryer ground than here.

Whatever the issue it must be really annoying the person doing the cutting I am not sure I would have the balls to go into someone elses garden even more so in the middle of the night. Maybe leave a letter with the lead and request that they tell you what the problem is rather than going about it underhandedly and doing what they are doing, also you could state that you have recoreded the incident after the first few times and that you plan to take the said video evidence to the police unless you can find a solution for all, you might find that this puts an end to it or you might get a letter back. You can also get some of them motion sensitive lights that turn on when they sense movement put them in the garden and once that comes on whoever is going it will be in full daylight glory. This might enable you to purchase a cheaper camera. I would be quite annoyed with this myself to be honest. I have alway been quite an open person and I like to think that people think well of me and I would want to sort it out if that wasnt the case but I have learnt over the years that somepeople you just never get on with.

Leaving a note with the lead seems like a good idea, I'll suggest that to her.

It seems so random, I'm sure basil is 4ish years old and shes lived there around 12 years.. next doors lead is pretty flimsy but the dog is only little. Could probably snap it on the step I'd think but its been untouched so they definately think its her fault either that or the metal is a lot stronger than it looks.

In all the time shes been living there, shes never had an issue with anyone before.

I think if shes going to set something up, itll be a camera first to find out who it is and then motion lights after that.. I'm really curious to know who it is.

I was planning on buying her an electric bike for her birthday (see my other thread) so now I definately want a camera setup before I do that.

Does the back garden have a PIR activated flood light if not get one of them and point in the direction you believe it to be happening. Also I got a foscam and the night vision is not bad but you need to drop it down to 320 by 240 to get a decent fps otherwise at 640 your looking at 3fps and blurry.

Best bet is a decent floodlight to light the area up with movement set to stay on for a minute and then the foscam will work at 15fps at 640x480 and get a decent look

Would have to play with it a little bit to make sure the lights dont come on with cats/other animals or come on before the person doing it is in view of the camera, something to think about though!

Swann Day/Night Security Camera's are good, a friend of mine has 4, linked up to a small hard drive that records the footage, then shown on the monitor above also, works quite well, good enough quality to see who is actually being filmed, not a bad price either if you just need the one

Hope they get caught!

edit; some camera's have a built in memory stick, so you can take it out and watch the footage, so you dont have to have any cables trailing around

Plough your parents into the garden, skin the dog and use the fur to make a dress for your wife who's also your brother.

Should sort the problem.
