How do I dial this US number from UK?

I am trying to access my work share portfolio but the website is telling me I need to call the following number to activate my account:

+1 (732) 512-3172

Do I need to stick a 00 in front and in which case do I need the 1 as well?

Correct, assuming you are allowed to make international calls, and you are dialing from the UK.

Lift the handset, then dial

00 1 732 512 3172 ( there is no need to wait in this process ).

Calling UK to USA
Precede phone calls with 001 then dial full USA number. i.e. 001 (555) 555-5555

How does one text a US number then?

I searched and tried the ways but a friend still didn't receive. Then I just added a + at the start and she received it. So I'm assuming that's just the usual way. :confused:

Mobiles generally need the + sign I've found.

+ and 00 are interchangable for international calls, use + for a mobile and 00 from a landline.

On the other hand, when she receives my messages, my number has an extra 4 digits inserted I think after the '07'. :confused:

those are probably the UK country code and a code to tell her it's from outside the states

(if it's 0044).

Whats with the two 0's anyway? When I need to call another country I just type the country code without 0's. Eg 44*********

would it not have been easier to have just picked up the phone and tried it than generating a thread on OcUK?

(not trying to have a go or anything - just curious)

I did try it, even my leet Google skills failed in finding a correct answer

I'm not *quite* sad enough to not even try before asking the random loons in GD!

So in NZ I goto call my local chinese 444600 oh wait I started to dial UK!

(vice versa etc)

0 National Call
00 International
1-9 Local (expect 999 etc)
