Really should have been paying more attention to what I was doing before I posted the thread.
Had to use a OEM XP CD that I shouldn't have to install on the laptop as the recovery cd is pre-SP2 and useless. I didn't know if the Microsoft guy over the phone was giving me an activation code based on a dodgy key or the real legitimate OEM key that I had tried to enter from the sticker (tried to enter the legit key before activation but it didn't seem to work)
I am happy to say that I am now legal again as I am using the correct OEM key on the laptop .
I've installed an OEM install with an OEM key on a system that is unchanged from the OEM state other than the fact that I've not used an OEM recovery CD.
I doubt the Microsoft operator would have provided me with a code to activate if something was wrong. I even said that I had used another OEM CD to install.
I would have used the recovery cd had it been for the fact that the CD is completely out of date and doesn't even contain SP1. Also OEM's take it apon themselves to bundle a lot of tripe in with there recovery cd's and I wanted a clean install without the need to un-install yet more crap that is just not needed.
I'm just glad that I bought second hand than go for a brand new Dell system. Much less hassle to have done what I have done with the Acer than with the rubbish that Dell would have had installed.
