How do Upgrade Windows Server Standard SP2 to the R2 Version

It's not a patch - it is a OS version upgrade.
As you are running Server 2008 SP2 64bit then you can do an "in-place" upgrade.
Get your R2 license and then run the installation from within the OS - this will upgrade your server.
We're currently doing the same but we're going from Server 2003 R2 64bit to Server 2008 R2 - in-place works fine in this situation, so from 2008 should be even easier and straight-forward.

I have taken a full backup in case but I guess it should be pretty straight forward? Insert the Windows Server 2008 Standard R2 CD, it will detect what I already have running then upgrade it. It should'nt affect anything thats already correct? Its just a file and backup server, not a DC.
These things always worry me!

It should run a check first and advise you of things to do.
If there is anything "critical" it won't allow you to continue.
For example on one of ours it got to the checking point and decided:
1. Needs a reboot - some system files need updating before upgrade
2. Needs to free up space on C - it wants 16GB free to do the upgrade
3. Sophos AV needed uninstalling.
Had no option but to click close - no "next" option.
Did all the things it asked and then next time around all was fine.
So just make sure you read all of the prompts and follow any pre-upgrade tasks you are asked to complete.
