Hi got a Advent roma 2001 laptop just for surfing whilst sat in the lounge.
It has a HDMI socket output, just tried to connect it to my plasma tv and nothing.

How do i enable it and am i right in thinking whatever is on the laptop screen will then be shown on my big tv's screen? as well as audio?

thanks. Just not sure how to swich the socket on.

Sometimes there is a FN button with the text in a certain colour, and there will be some keys that will have a extra function when the FN button is pressed, the functions will be in the same colour as the FN text.

I think these are usually on the 'F' keys. One of these keys will allow you to change the video output, on my laptop I usually set it to show only on the HDTV.

okay got it working now. BUT the TV resolution is not filling the screen. tried changing the output resolution and not doing anything, it has picked up my tv as it says pansonic plasma.

It just is a screen within my tv. Wont seem to fill it. even when playing with secondary resolution setings

Have you tried putting anything on that screen? As when I hook mine up and put nothing on the secondary screen it has a massive black border and the windows back ground in the middle, but when I put something on it and maximize it, it fills the screen.

You could also try closing your laptop lid which should shut the laptop screen off and make the tv screen your main screen.

how did you want it set up? both screens displaying the same thing? The tv screen being an extension of the laptop? Or just the TV screen displaying things?

i seem to have worked it out. It seems you cannot have when using clone (same view on laptop as on tv) different resolutions. Which is a shame.

Means everytime i connect my hdmi cable from laptop to tv i have to change laptop res from 1366x768 to 1280x720 so it fills my Plasma screen.

No other way of doing this ie, same display on both but at ifferent resolutions?

JFP.....Yes i would like both screens displaying the same things.

Your TV needs to scale the signal. Not sure about this, if this is done on the TV or PC end. I would think the PC dumbly supplies the low res image to the TV, so the TV has to scale the image up if you want it full-screen. However, it will get pretty blurry.

If you use mirror mode you can't have different resolutions. You'll have the lowest res corresponding mostly on the laptop one.

You can set a higher resolution with your TV or external monitor only when used as secondary display (internal laptop display will be switch off) or extended display.

FN button only works with VGA port, but may depend on the laptop or netbook... ???

I done this the other day and as soon as i plugged it in i had the same screen thats on my laptop on my 42" tv, it filled the whole screen and was very sharp and great to watch, watched a film i have on my lappy this way and it was very good, no settings to play with just "plug and play" so to speak.

You're right !

No setting needed, only if you need to change the resolution... ;)
