Hi
im thinking of upgrading/downgrading to one of those passive cooled ati 2600XT cards. Main reason, i want silent!

Im happy with the performance of the 7800gtx card. How does 2600xt compare?

I have two system fans at the moment, how hot will the passive cooled card get? If i need another system fan, then there's no point.

the 2600xt isn't that silent when its running max out the fan kicks in.., but as for saying that i can't hear it because my system as 4 big fans plus a big cpu fan..

Why not just get a silent cooler for it?

Thermalright makes passive ones...then you can get a quiet 120mm fan blowing over it or something.

i might just do that.

also part of my consideration for getting a new card was dx10 support for vista

Well as far as I understand it, the main excitement over DX10 is the pretty eyecandy, and the 2600xt isn't a powerful enough card to play games in DX10 with eyecandy and such...

The 8800GTS is a great DX10 capable card for the money and thermalright has a silent cooler for it I believe.

Well DX10 was all meant to be about running effects with the least hit on performance. It doesn't seem to be that way just now and also there will be a lot different textures and surfaces to things like Rocks, building faces and other things. So it's looking like a bit of both.

I honestly think they just add things on the list of what DX10 can do as they go along :p.

Forget Dx10, its not needed yet, we've had Dx10 cards for 10 months now, and all we have to show for it is a crappy couple of games patched to Dx10 which run like dogs, and Bioshock which only has better water splashes, and dust (from when you smash something, it doesn't band), but runs about the same as Dx9, were just going to have to wait for a fair few games before Dx10 is worth considering, and that won't be this year, or any time soon imo, everyones just buying Dx10 cards for their Dx9 performance.

If you want a Dx10 card, then wait until theres a fair few games out using it, splashing out on Vista, and a Dx10 card just for a couple of crappy patched to Dx10 games and Bioshock aint worth it.

I'm sure there are guys who know more about this than me but I think the HD 2950 Pro and one of nvidias new cards are going to be a fair bit lower power consumption than the current high end ones, which might prompt someone to do what XFX did with the 7950 GTs and HIS with the HD 2600 XT "iSilence" Zalman. That way you could get a decent upgrade and silent graphics card cooling.

It'll be a few months but that 7800 GTX should handle everything fine up till then :)
