How does the GTX 580 compare to the GTX 480

Is it worth the extra money going for the 580 over the 480? I was hanging on for the AMD 69xx cards before I purchased my new system, but as the AMD offering has been delayed, I wish to buy now.

The OC Ultima Dreadnought system is what I have been looking at. This is obviously a great system, but is the 580 massively better than the 480 - and is it massively more expensive?

Many thanks.

480 to 580 not worth the upgrade.

480 @ 860-2000 is roughly on par with stock 580gtx.

Yea but what happens when you overclock the GTX 580 it seems to be something people overlook when comparing lol.

Yes when you overclock it, it gives a 480 good spanking 15%-20% or so.
All I am saying is 480 to 580 is not worth 15-20% and slightly less noise.
WHo upgrades to get 15-20% more? Not me.

Overclocking on the gtx580 does not seem to be much better than the gtx480. If both cards are running the same clock speed the gtx580 is on average around 10% faster.

So a quieter and cooler system. From my previous postings, I'm lead to believe that the 480 is quite a loud card (though fast!)

What difference might one expect with FPS if they opted for the 580 over the 480?

I don't think he has a gtx480 as he states hes waiting to buy the system. I think hes asking is it worth paying the extra for the gtx580. I would probably spend the extra for the gtx580 if you have the money as it will be much cooler, a lot less noise and you get the 20% speed boost as well.

You could also put it this way. The gtx580 is getting touted as fermi done right so this makes the gtx480 fermi done badly. I know which one i would want lol.

Just to clarify; I am buying a brand new system from scratch and wondering what to go for. I previously priced-up the Ultima Dreadnought, but was advised to wait for both AMD and Nvidia to introduce their new GPU's. However I cannot wait until December - I'm chomping at the bit lol.

At a quick glance the 580 is around £100 more than the 480.

I don't know which systems OC would fit the 580 to for me. Do you think they would slot one into the Dreadnought?

It's quieter and cooler and that's worth a lot. That said, if getting a new system today I'd get a 6870 - best bang for buck atm.

Really?

How does this card compare to the 460/470/480? Just looking at a random OC system there and the 460 + 470 are cheaper than this. The 480 and 580 obviously cost more - are they a class above the 6870?

In that case skip the 480GTX.
Its fast but its hot / loud / crippled and EOL (end of line) product
580GTX is all that 480 GTX should have been.

Get the 580gtx

The 480 and 580 stomp on the 6870, they're not meant to compete.

If you've got the money then the 580 is a nice choice right now but the 470 is more than enough for 99% of people and is exceptionally well priced.

Check out some benches for your resolution and decide what's needed.

I'm a bit of a technophobe mate - benches to me = splitting an atom. :) I don't know what I'm looking for or where to find it - I'm not just being lazy honest!!

Also I don't have a resolution as I don't have a monitor - this will be coming with my new system. I'm looking at this Samsung.

The only problem i see with getting the gtx580 is unless you are fast you may have to wait as there is only 3 left in stock. If i was you i would get the order in now as it sounds like you want to get to gaming asap. The 6870 is a great card but the gtx580 is about 40-45% faster.

And yes, they'll more than likely put a 580 in the dreadnought, just give them a call.

Awesome.

I take it this system would be a great gaming rig? If this is the system I go for I'm planning to change the HDD from the Barracudda the Samsung Spinpoint F3, add a wirelss adapter and possibly (probably? lol) go for a GTX 580 over the 480.

Personally if you really can't wait till ATI release there new cards I would get the 580 just simply for the reason that it is quiet (some say that it is the quietest card on the market at the minute compared to the 480, 5870 and a 285 which was overclocked iirc etc.) and runs very cool and of course is the fastest single GPU card on the market at the minute.

However personally IMO I don't think it is worth the price at the minute for me to even consider buying it, it would have to be around £370, but that is up to you if you want to spend that much considering it is really just a 485 (what fermi should have been).

Also it depends on what resolution your using, if you are going to be playing games at 1920x1080 then the 580 would probably be the best choice for single GPU and if you wouldn't mind going SLI/crossfire then probably 2x6870, 2x460 or 2x470 (although the 470 run very hot and noisy, but they are at a very good price at the minute to make that up in some ways :p)

Also you need to take into consideration, how many monitors you might want to run or are running at the minute as 1 nvidia GPU (580) can only run 2 monitors max iirc (you would need to go SLI in order to run 3 or more) and with ATIs cards you can run up to 6 iirc (with the 6xxx series that is).

EDIT:

Also personally I wouldn't go with pointless benchmarks like Fud, haven or whatever they are as personally I think it is completely pointless, most people buy GPUs for gaming not running a bit of software telling you a big number and also it doesn't really give you a great indication of real world performance for games as games could be poorly coded etc. therefore they will run like crap no matter how good the card is or a game could be coded very well and run really well on even a low-mid range card and of course certain games prefer certain brands of cards over another.
