RE: JUNIOR VT/AVID ASSISTANT

Dear ***** *******,

I am writing to you to apply for the Junior VT / Avid Assistant position that has arisen at ****.

This role really appeals to me as I would love to get into offline editing in the future and this would be a big step towards achieving my goal.

I currently work as an Ingest Operator for ****** on *******. At the moment I am working on a large music project for *********, where we are encoding pretty much their entire catalogue of music videos, for broadcast use and music video downloads on sites such as *****, ****** and ********.
Most of the videos are supplied on either Digi Beta or Beta SP but we do get quite a few D2s and D1s of older videos. We have a router panel that allows us to patch the VT machines into a Content Agent, which runs on Digital Rapids software to encode the tapes into a 50i Mpeg 2 file. This file is then transferred to FlipFactory, which creates an 8mbps Mpeg 2 file and Windows Media 9 file so Universal’s clients can preview videos before ordering them. We also ingest metadata information onto Universal’s website so clients can see whether a file is NTSC or PAL, the running time, aspect ratio, ID numbers and colour information. Most of these orders come through us and we upload the 8mbps file to Universal’s clients over an FTP site. For large orders, the files are copied onto a fire wire hard drive and shipped out to the client.

Previous to this role I worked as a Despatch Assistant for ****** in ******. This position taught me about the various tape/film formats, the Xytech database system, the booking in and out of tapes and tape movements to the relevant locations around the building. As the majority of the work in despatch came from VT Operations I acquired a fair amount of knowledge on how they operate and also the importance of meeting deadlines to meet the requirements of the client.

In my spare time I edit my own videos using either Avid Xpress, Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro. These videos are just videos of places I’ve been to but they have allowed me to practice various editing techniques and get hands on skills in technical areas such as digitising and conforming. I like playing video games too and have made several video game videos. You can have a look at my work on www.mia-media.co.uk/portfolio.html. All the videos on the site were compressed with Sorenson Squeeze software or Windows Media Encoder to create wmv formatted files. Apple Compressor was also used to convert some content into HD H.264 for playback in QuickTime. I also design websites and I currently update www.*****.co.uk, which is part of ********’s creative services division.

I feel that the skills I have developed over time are very well suited to this role and as I develop more skills in the role I’ll prove to be a very important asset at ****.

Thank you for considering my application.

Yours sincerely,

**** *******

sounds too informal. 'large majority' or similar might be better.
and i'd agree with the above ^

It seems a bit overlong. Could you not just include some of the skills you've stated in this letter in your CV instead?

I have to send a covering letter though and my CV has got these skills listed, what should ideally go on a covering letter?

Do you know who you are writing too? Either way it looks too long, most of the information you have put there belongs in bullet point format on your c.v. rather than written long hand in a covering letter.

Unless you have been specifically asked to detail those skills in a covering letter would say it's too long.

Beaten to the punch... Just looked at the onelife link and it's very good!
