How easy and timely to keep same number?

Hi, I don't post here very often to hello to all of you. I'm seriously considering changing network (from Orange to one of T-Mobile or O2) and have a quick question about how easy it is to keep the same number. I realise I need to get a PAC code from Orange which should be no problem as I'm out of contract. My question is how long will it take to get my old number up and running on a new network? A few years ago I heard stories about it taking months to actually get a number transfered - is this still the case?

For those of you who are interested the reason for changing network revolves around the price and lack of Orange M600s. I was ofered a price of £30 to upgrade to one last month but they were out of stock. Having called back today (they are in stock on Orange's site) I've been quoted £150 plus and 18 month contract and a 2 month wait - this only came down to £100 when I pointed out to retentions that I could get one for free on a different network. Shame really as I quite like Orange. Still there's no loyalty in this corporate world!

I switched from o2 to Vodafone a couple of years ago and I was on a temporary number for about 5 days.

My Orange contract is up in September and they called me this week to offer me the same again for twelve months. I didn't know what phones were on the market as I've been out of the loop for a bit, so I told them I'd call them back. After some research I decided to go for the SPV M5000, which they quoted me at £199  I told them I could get it for free on another website and also for £69 with a much better contract on T-Mobile, so they stuck me on hold and a minute later came back with a £100 saving on the phone.

Obviously this still isn't as good as T-Mobile so I'm going to leave it a few weeks and then call Orange back, if they can't do me a much better deal I'll just port to T-Mobile :)

when you switch to vodafone you dont get a temp. number any more, basically you carry on using the old phone until a port date which is normally 5 working days away...so on that date turn off your old phone and start using the new one. Very simple...although the hardest thing is the WAIT to actually use the new phone lol.
