How far do you push a neighbour

I'm getting some work done at the moment on our cellar, and we're up to the point now where we need to plasterboard and plaster the walls and ceilings.

My neighbour is a handy man and I asked him if he'd do the plastering for us. He said he could do all the boarding for us and then help his mate to do all the plastering. and he gave us a good quote for doing it all

i double checked with him if he still wanted the job and when they could do it, and he did. however last time i spoke to him was on saturday morning when he came to have a look, he said he'd speak to his mate on the evening and let me know

I've not heard anything off him since, and when I saw him tonight he never mentioned anything.

I'm just wondering how far can you push a neighbour when it comes to stuff like this. after all i dont want to spoil anything seeing as we've only lived here a year

Just be nice and ask if he's spoken to his mate.

I can't see that he'd mine you asking if you explain you just want to get it done and are not being pushy!

youre paying him
hes the one that offered to go a bit more for ya

talk to him

however if youre feeling like this
it was a bad idea to get your neighbour involved

because your relationship hasnt evolved to the point where you can talk to him and say - hope yous aint cutting any corners - youve messed up a bit there
i dont like this
id prefer it like this

all these things you probably wont be able to say

Fap. No wait...

Just remind him once more about the quote etc and set a time deadline, but not very formally, and see how he responds. "Yeah the missus says ive gotta get something down by the end of friday y'know so..".

You're kinda stuck between a rock and a hard place now... on the one hand you could be waiting months, but on the other hand he could be put out if you go elsewhere to get the job done.

Is there any sort of deadline you can "create", like "I need this doing by Christmas/the Strictly Come Dancing Finale/Bonfire Night/Halloween/5:45pm" or whatever?

Apparently there's a song about it, it goes "....that's when neighbours become good friends!" - It's from a TV show, I think it was called The Person(s) Next Door.
