How good is a 6800GT these days?

Hello,
I bought my 6800GT about six months ago and have generally been pleased with it. The other day a mate made an offer to buy it for a reasonable price (I'd be losing about £35 on what it originally cost) and am thinking about what to do.

I could do with opinions on whether the 6800GT is still a good enough card to run most new games on medium-high settings for the next 12 months or so, of if this would be a good opportunity to upgrade?

Are you on pci-e or agp?

In my opinion i still think its a good card, i reckon you should overclock it to get some more juice out of it, this is if you keep it though. Ive got a X800XT PE which is just a tad better (6558 3DMARK05) and this runs everything so i guess your card would be good aswell.

If its AGP then you may as well hang on to it until such time as you upgrade to PCI.

My 6800NP is still fine for most games, only Oblivion has really made it creak. I guess it depends how important high FPS with full eye-candy is to you, and what resolution you run games at.

The 6800gt will struggle with the next generation of games with anything above medium/low. 12 months will see it being more or less useless, with Crysis and UT2007.
 
6800gt is a very good card still. can run lots of games on high settings. only suffers in the latest games like GRAW, Oblivion, FEAR. and those 3 games don't seem to be well programmed anyway. other than that the 6800GT can run everything else fine.

also it depends on how much your going to get paid out for the card and if its agp or pci-e.

if its pci-e i suggest you sell it if the money is good since there is a lot more choice and the longer you leave it the lower the value becomes of your 6800.

It's an AGP card, I think it originally cost me close to £150 and I've been offered £100.

Based on what people have said I'm tempted to hang on to it for a while longer as I'm not really a hardcore gamer and don't mind if I'm not running at the highest possible settings.
 
My AGP 6800GT (oc'ed to 400 core, 1.1 mem) runs rFactor, GTL and all my CAD stuff just fine. I tend to game at 1024x768 though, so at higher resolutions I suspect that it would struggle in some of the recent games.
 
agp is worth more cash these days. also it depends on what you can replace it with. if your board has a pci-e slot then its worth selling the card.
 
if your running at low res's (like me around 1024x768 or 1280x1024) then the GT will still give you a pretty damn good gaming experience, my LE does the job perfectly, runs WOW at full gfx and top res at around 35-50fps without slipping up, and NFS most wanted, Quake 4 and BF2 still look gorgeous too :)
 
mine is still aerving me pretty well. upgraded the rest of my system by getting the asrock board, and it breathed new life into my games. still life in the old dog yet :)

Will finnally look at upgrading once vista is released

Hang on to it. Unless you're looking to game at high-res in the latest titles then it should be more than enough for the job, until DX10/Vista arrives anyway.
 
Well your 6800gt (like mine) isnt far short of the performance of the 7600gt so price it from there.
Additionally, if it aint broke and you cant afford to go up to high specs (eg 78/79's) then stick with it until you can.

I've decided to turn down the offer and keep the 6800GT for another year until I go PCI express :)

As far as I've been able to find out the only cards which better it on AGP are the 6800 Ultra (which very few people probably bothered to get as almost every 6800GT will overclock to the same speed) and the 7800GS which is still fairly new and nearly £100 more than a 6800GT.
 
I'd hang on to it...always leave upgrading to the last minute imo and nothing out anytime soon will stretch it that much. In a years time you can upgrade to something monstrous =)
 
As a completely different thought to everyone else, what CPU have you? if its a 939 or 754 or even a 775, you could grab a CHEAP PCIE motherboard (like the asrock Dual Sata) and then stick in a PCIE graphic card in it.

Asrock board is 40 or so, and you could grab an x1800XT for about 170... so about 100 for an upgrade that would last you for 9 months or so :) (including the price of the solg 6800GT)
