how long do you predict i7's to last until they start to struggle.

theyll begin to struggle when thte next gen consoles come out. which might not be for another 5 years. any quad core i predict wont really struggle until then, nor will most high end gpus. it is a good time to buy high end pc hardware

Banning something doesnt make something stop existing, It will just mean people will get away with being one, and you can't call them it, although to be fair, its probably for the best. The fanboys on here are obvious anyway.

i'm aware of the opening post, But I'll rephrase mine.

Does the same stand for Hex cores, which are spec'd often on these forums and said to offer the same performance for cheaper?

It's simply nothing more than ad hominem name calling and provocative and isn't conducive to a polite and friendly conversation . .

Anyone who blindly buys a certain manufacturers products will always have to argue their case, facts, reasons etc . . . the arguments are fair game for discussion as these are "external" to an individual . .

In short . . . attack the argument . . . not the person! ;)

The ******* on here are obvious anyway
try your best not to use it or insinuate it . . .

Agreed that its better to have a good conversation rather than drop to calling people..that word. But it's been used for years on this forum, and others. People have been called it including myself, attempting to ban the word seems silly. I was called a PS3 fanboy because I told people to buy one over the 360, Why? because i preferred the console, and i felt it had genuine benefits over the competition. I got a lot of stick for that, But I don't mind it, as it's just peoples last line of defence.

The word has been used all over the forum, and I dont understand how now it's suddenly going to get banned from use? Not asking this nastily but is it you instigating getting the word banned due to your getting called it when you give AMD specs? Because it's just a little strange that i've never seen a mention of a ban anywhere else before, seems to be a CPU section idea.

I will stop using the word if it get's added to the FAQ or a Don tells me to, because to be honest. It's just part of forum life. Trolls, fanboys and spammers, OH MY!

I know this is off topic, So i'll stop now.

On Topic...ish

Would be nice to hear your views on Hex core Big.wayne, As you're always front of the queue when it comes to offering it as an alternative. Do you feel you've been telling people to get a processor with the same sort of life span as I7, with regards to when it'll begin to struggle.

:)

start struggling, depends on what you call struggling, lets take encoding for example a 700 mb avi encode to dvd is always gonna take 3-4 mins, today and in 2 years time unless the programme you use makes it quicker, certainly wont be slower,

games, most games are fine, try supreme commander forged alliance 81k map you and 7 cpu players, play for about an hour, watch any cpu struggle including hex cores,

so depends on what you do with it, if you play supcom then they already struggle, if you play trackmania then itll go on forever.

I'd say about 5 yrs given past hardware although I suspect we will see fewer mainstream games titles released that really tax our systems. The sheer number of man hrs required to make them surely means that the pace of gaming advances will slow up if they are to take advantage of the technology available today. I know budgets are huge for the biggest titles, but there must be a case for "too many cooks spoil the broth".

What I'd really like to see is smarter PC games development, more optimisation and getting the most out of the hardware not just relying on the hardware to become more powerful. You'd almost think the hardware manufacturers were selling the games! In fact if I was them I'd support developers that made really taxing software, also offering fancy visuals, to create more demand for my new products...;)

I really don't think you need worry at this point about when your cpu will struggle i am on a q9450 granted it is oc'd to 3.4 but it struggles with nothing i do right now and i don't see myself suddenly getting into specialist programs so it will probably be good to go for at least 2 more years. For gamers the pc landscape is a little barren at the minute with gpu being far more important then cpu and i don't see that changing anytime soon even crysis 2 is being developed for console so unlike the past isn't going to be the pc pusher it has been. As long as your happy with what it does thats how long it lasts when you reach a point wher it is clearly bottlenecking or inhibiting your pc in anyway is the time to get something new but i really don't think that is going to be soon at all same with the amd hex cores just to answer that :).

It's hard to tell with how fast advancement is these days - but ballpark figure would suggest that i7's wont be able to cope in 6+ years. Early quads are still coping with everything, hell even some early duals, and they were released many years ago.

Years and Years to be honest, my 3ghz Q6600 and 8800GTX still play any game I want at 1920x1200 with medium/high settings. When I look at the cpu graphs on my second monitor none of the cores are maxed out in anything I play.

I'll probably upgrade at the end of next year, would quite like a motherboard with proper PCI-E 2.0 support, Light Peak, USB 3.0 and SATA 6GB/s.

Nothings changing til next generation consoles in which case PC's will struggle to render as well as consoles for approx one month then wait patiently for the next 5 years for the next console release.

I'd say 5 years+ as well.

Untill I replaced my 2004 Athlon 3200+ (single core) with AGP graphic last year, I was still playing all the newest games (fallout 3 etc.) !

As long as you keep doing fresh install of Windows once a year, your i7 will serve you well for a long time if you have desktop.

For laptop market on the other hand, new CPUs with good on-die GPUs + SSD drives for SATA III, SATA IV or whatever comes will leave your current setup behind in terms of battery life, heat, performance and value.

I do think with computers for gaming the tech is moving on that quickly for other stuff like photoshop etc its moving too fast for gaming! A i7 and a am3 quad core at a decent clock will **** your gaming needs for a couple of years at least! If anything it will be the GPU's way out before the CPU's.
