How long do you store text messages for before deleting?

When I had a Windows Mobile I used to sync it with Myphone and then every 3 months or so I'd archive the message which keeps them on the website, but removes them from your phone. If I needed a message back I simply moved to out of the archive and on next sync it would return it to the phone.

Does Android have anything like this, but preferable where I can store the archive myself rather than on a website?
