How long does it take for people to become addicted to nicotine?

It's weird because some people dont become atticted and some are terribly addicted, for example, social smokers....how can u social smoke and not become addicted???

By definition social smoking is when you do it only when you're on a night out.

I used to do this, when I started wanting to go and buy fags when I was sitting at home I knew there was a problem. Stopped it there and then.

It just depends on how your brain works. For instance, after I officially 'quit' I had one or two at the pub a few months after and then forgot about it. In a way maybe it was a test to see if I still cared for cigarettes or to see how they affected me. I suppose I was lucky never to get any physical cravings.

Smoke from time to time, have done for years. Never once become addicted.

i tend to do the same at times. normally when im out. and waiting for mates to finish up to go to the next pub, then smoke between.

but never when im not out drinking. and can say that i have never been close to being adicted

the reasoned debate that goes on here thesedays is awesome.

i've smoked on and off for years now. though work of late has driven me more to it than in the past. not had one since before christmas though and i think it'll stay this way.
"how long" varies so highly you'll never get an answer though.

i tend to have some on a night out when im on the booze on a sat evening. i just like the nicotine rush :D although, i wont smoke in the weekday, nor when im sober. its all about will power, you have to have that to be able to say NO.

I smoke most days and have done for a long time ... but when i go on holiday and stuff i dont smoke at all (2 weeksand stuff)? its become a relaxing habit when at home tho

I dont smoke all day until about 8ish either

contrary to what people say here about the body, nicotine addiction is completely mental.

and to your question, it be really hard to get a answer because everyone who is starting out smoking believes they are not addicted and the seasoned addicts cant think back that far.

each person will be different, and each person will have a anecdote tale to tell which describes the point they sort of knew they was a addict. " my first cigarette smoked alone" or " when i had to turn the house upside down looking for a fag end ".

personally i believe your addicted on the 2nd cigarette , why else would you smoke it knowing how bad the first one was? its because through peer pressure and conditioning you make yourself want it. this is the first sign of addiction, addicted to the method , addicted to the way it makes you look, addicted to the stigma and in time addicted to the nicotine.

it isn't one day your a non addict and the next bang, your a addict. its a smooth transition .

I've been smoking on/off for years.

Always in social situations, never alone, and I never crave one.

Stick me in a social situation with non-smokers, I don't smoke, stick me with some of my mates who do, I'll be inclined to have a few.

Quite fun as well, as a non-constant smoker means I sometimes get lightheaded off of one, hahaha :)

you do crave, its just that your using word like " ill be inclined " instead.

the fact that you smoke period suggests some sort of dependence/addiction. and part of addiction in any area be it smoking , heroin , alcohol., is denial.

oh and how i became addicted to cigarettes in the first place, was the light headedness they gave. back when i was 18-19 i smoked pot, and when i was out in the pub i would smoke a ciggy to substitute the high from pot, and a cigarette would give you this initial high. that's how i ended up smoking for 11 years.

I used to smoke more but now just a couple a day, I didn't like the unhealthy effects but still like to smoke. It is enjoyable, the feeling of smoking and the taste, I just find it nice but I am addicted as well.

Cannabis is not addictive and that tastes damn nice, even if it wasn't for the high it just tastes very nice, like those big hooker pipes that they smoke strawberry leaves on in Muslim places. Why do they smoke? any kind of drug is against Islam. BECAUSE THEY LIKE IT. People that have never tried it and instead just think what TV which tells them to think are the retards. Moses99p I am looking at You.

Cannabis is addictive despite what people say. I use to smoke it everyday and you do build a psychological dependancy on it. And virtualy all the heavy weed smokers I know say the same thing.

I'd be a smoker today if it wasn't for my body rejecting it! I once had a fag, then straight after i had another, couple of minutes later i was throwing up! Usually, when i throw up from something it makes my body gag if i have it again! For example i can no-longer drink spirits in ways other than shots without gaging (thats means no glasses of whiskey etc) due to me going ott on spirits one night, i also can't drink cider anymore due to them making 2 liter bottles and me being stupid and have 3

All my friends smoke, if it wasn't for the fact i physically can't i know for a fact i would! I'm glad i don't though :)

I don't agree with that in the slightest.

By that logic, the fact that I drink alcohol on occasion means I am addicted to it?

Take me away from smokers, and I don't smoke, around smokers, I like the social aspect of it, moreso than the actual cig.

My gf smokes, propely, like 10 a day, whereas I don't smoke at all during the week, and have a few if we have a get-together or go to a party or whatever over the weekend.

I fail to see how that consitutes as an addiciton.

Why my ex, who didn't smoke, I didn't smoke for almost 2 years, and never craved one or anything.

The people chain-smoking before a 2 hour flight, or even a 90 minute movie, or those that get cranky/moody if they go for a few hours without a puff, that is addiction.

that is 'extreme' addiction , there are levels of addiction, although you may not be in the same category as those who are nervous wrecks without a smoke, doesn't mean that you are not addicted to nicotine at some level.

why smoke in the first place if there is no addiction ? why would you want to even put that disgusting thing in your mouth and inhale the smoke from it?

surely there has to be some addiction there for you to overcome the disgusting aspects from smoking , otherwise people would never continue smoking,

this is a common misnomer about addiction, and its this, people think the less they are doing something the less it equates to addiction, but its wrong.

a person can drink 5 pints of lager a day and totally be at ease with him/herself, not have any dependencies regarding drinking, and a person can be a total alcohol addict by only drinking once a week.

its not about amount its about attitude towards it.

you say your not addicted to nicotine. then ok, next time your out with the lads who smoke around you, see how easy it is NOT to " be inclined " to light one up,and keep this up forever.

definetly addictive

so are other drugs that maybe cant be mentioned as much on here even. though theres no proof that they're pyshically addictive people get mentally addicted.

people get addicted to the state of mind that the drugs put them in , they end up not feeling normal unless theyre stoned/tripping. well in my expierience anyway...

Oh I see, you a big anti-smoke person, that would explain it. :p

Sometimes I like to eat chocolate cake, doesn't mean I am addicted to cake ;)

Stoned yes, wouldn't say as much for the others, as functioning in day to day life only seems to be doable on weed/coke/heroin.

explain what ?, that im against smoking? of course i am and the people who are not, are smokers. hmm obvious , and you say that as if being a person who is for smoking is the way to go in life.

"big anti-smoke person" i see now you have nothing else to say on this subject and now patronising is the only path you can think of , instead of logic and reasoning.

I like to smoke, never used to but smoking is really relaxing when Im at work, its something to do. Im not addicted, i just do it occasionally. Sometimes I might crave a fag, but I wont have one, as long as im controlling my actions, and dont buy a pack of fags then its fine.. If I dont think about having a fag I never want one.. so im not addicted

I know non-smokers who aren't anti-smokers.

What I was insinuating, and being patronising about, is that your warped view of addiction is down to you being very anti-smoking, which is different to just a person who does not smoke.

It's a like a person who has chosen to lead a life of celibacy calling people with normal sex-lives addicts.

Yes, smoking is bad for you, and technically offer nothing positive, but it can still be an enjoyable thing if done in moderation.

Someone living in the countryside who smokes 2 cigs a day will still have better lungs than a non-smoker living in a big city.
