How long does it take you to trust a new HDD

UPDATE: first 145 GB now transferred, now transferring the next 179 GB!

EDIT: this one will take a very long time as the steam folder makes up about 80 GB of this and has MANY tiny files :)

You are probably finished by now. The first backup is always the worst!

I recently bought an external drive. My motherboard had an e-SATA and not many all in one packs satisfied my needs. So I got a separate enclosure and a 1TB Samsung F3 to throw in it.

Compared to USB 2, I went from 30 MB/s to 100-120 MB/s!!!! I filled the drive and verified in a fraction of the time! Not to mention much faster access times and random read/writes.

USB 3 will also help bring these kinds of transfer speeds, but I doubt it will be as fast as e-SATA which is after all a direct SATA connection to the external drive.

i also have a plan for the old 160 GB drive, im going to turn it into a media drive for the TV :) so am transfering my collection to that one too, then i will need to get some adapter thing for it

SPEC ME!!!! :D

As soon as I get any new drive, I always always run the manufacturer's diagnostic on it - both short and exteneded tests.

If the drive sails through that with zero errors, I then install Windows ensuring a FULL format is performed. Providing all is well, I just use the drive as normal.

For peace of mind, I might run the manufacturer's tests again in a months time, so I don't get any nasty surprises!
