How many GDers are still into high-end PCs?

Honestly, I am way behind all the new technology. The last time I put together a high-end PC was in 2003. I had saved up enough to buy myself a Vapochill and managed to get my computer running at a respectable 3.2Ghz. That was then, now I am on a laptop that's less than half the speed of that rig, I have never put together a dual-core system, my last GFX was AGP and I don't even know the difference between DDR and DDR2 let alone owned the latter.

What about you? Have you grown out of spending silly money on your system? Got another expensive hobby (girlfriend?) to waster your hard earned quids on?

I just never expected to see such a big difference in both speed and capacity!

Still playing games on a rig I last upgraded in November '05 - I just have to turn down the graphics a bit. Haven't had the money to spend on a C2D system so don't know too much about them. Since moving to uni in Edinburgh from a small rural town I've had a lot more things to spend my money on and a lot less money too.

Since joining these fine forums I have upgraded my PC twice. Most recently a month or two ago from an AMD 4400+ rig to a C2D E6600.

I am planning on upgrading again shortly after Intel's price drop!

So in answer to your question.

Have you grown out of spending silly money on your system?

No. :D

Still into gaming on the PC here. Just pondering as to whether or not I should just do a quick upgrade with a X2 4400 (939) or just save the cash and build a complete new rig later.

Well my next upgrade will probably be for Crysis, I haven't spent much on my PC upgrading wise as I can get most PC games on the 360, PC gaming is seriously shoddy at the moment imo.

I'd go for latter mate. Much more fun building a brand new rig - plus by the time you get round to it, the prices will be cheaper.

Anyhow, I'm looking forward to the July Intel price cuts so I can plan my summer upgrade, I've got most of the components sorted but I'd love to be able to splash out on a Quad Core if the price was right.

Actually - when I say I'm still gaming, the last couple of games I've played have been KotOR and KotOR2 :) Have played a few more recent games on it though - handled Oblivion, STALKER, Medieval 2 and SC:DA not too badly.

I wish I had the spare cash floating about to build a new rig this summer.

I'm not even into PCs still, let alone high-end ones :p I've switched to an essentially gaming less MacBook and haven't turned back. I couldn't care less about the latest hardware anymore really. Well, I do, but not necessarily the fastest graphics card, more like HD material and so on.

When I had my last custom built computer I bought an iBook as laptop for uni and since then I've become an Apple fanboy.

I stripped my rig, sold it on eBay and bought a 20" iMac as well as the iBook.

I can't see myself ever going back to Windows, and therefore custom pc's, unless Microsoft do something special in the future. I have an Xbox 360 for gaming and the Mac does everything I did in Windows and more. And in a better way, in my personal opinion.

I did enjoy building computers and I will probably do it again when I have more money.

Completely stopped upgrading my computer. In fact I downgraded it not so long ago. I'm now using a 9700pro which came out before I even got into PC's in the first place.

Thing is I can't seem to stop myself reading these forums and as a consequence I'm still up to date on hardware, even if I'm not using it myself.

Nope. :) I wasn't a GDer until recently though, so who knows, you guys might have an effect on me.

In fact, I'd welcome it. I spend far too much on this bloody thing. Can you rehabilitate me GD? ;)

Last PC I built was an Athlon 850@1000 running on a KT7A with GeForce 2 all bought from OcUK, this was about 7 years ago when it was top of the range and I was mad into PCs/overclocking. That PC has long since been given to the GF and I only have my (fairly modest) laptop now.

I still have an interest in the latest PC technology, but the only thing I use the computer for now is email, web browsing and forums so I have no real plans to build/buy another desktop.

I rarely venture into any sections on here other than Motors, GD and SC

I haven't really been into high end PCs since 2002, when I developed Tinnitus. Gaming became out of the question due to the fact I found it hard to concentrate due to the noise generated by the Tinnitus, and the Tinnitus used to get worse when I was in close proximity of my Overclocked Athlon Thunderbird which was cooled with a FOP 38 IIRC.

In 2005 I upgraded my PC, but bought a prebuilt one from a well known on-line PC Retailer with a 3 Ghz PIV and 2 GB RAM. All I did to it was put a Geforce 6800 GT into it, which at the time, was a half decent card.

I still have at least one PC a week on my table to fix/repair/upgrade and at least 3 phone calls a week and 1 visit a day at work to help with PC problems but my last upgrade was 3 years ago (and all done for free).
However, my next upgrade has now been put back to July when the Quad Cores come down to a realistic price.

When I first joined, I'd be buying something new every month, and probably doing a full system overhaul every 6. This tailed off to 1 a year for 2003-2004-2005, and since then I upgraded about a year and a half ago to an AMD A64-X2 3800+, SLI 7800GT's and all the neccessary bumf to go with it.

Since then I've had Vista Ultimate, and a new radeon HD2900XT (and only had the new video card because it was free!).

So in answer the the actual question, yes I have pretty much given up frittering away my cash on computers, and instead spend it on having fun in the real world.

I haven't had enough money to seriously upgrade my PC for a few years but I do still take a fair interest in it and the technology behind it. Once I've cleared my overdraft from uni then I'll probably consider a new PC but it is a long way from a priority at the moment.

Oh and pyro DDR3 is out in ordinary Ram form now, it is no longer just the preserve of graphics cards so that is something else for you to learn about. :)
