How many GDers are still into high-end PCs?

I am less into gaming now (Only really play GTR2) but thinking of upgrading to dual core but my funds are depleted.

My last upgrade was 18months ago and last put together a PC about 9 months ago.

I was for about a year, in which time I went from:

Socket A XP2500 mobile
Socket 754 A64 3200+
Socket 754 A64 3400+
Socket 939 Opty 144
Socket 939 3800+

I'd had quite a lot of other hardware upgrades (2 gfx cards, and at least 3 mobos) in that time. I then realised I waas probably wasting my money and haven't really spent much since, apart from the odd new HDD. :p

I've never been into high end PCs. The cutting edge has always been very pricey at the time. I last did a significant upgrade around 2003 to a machine which was perhaps mid-range even then. It is still more then sufficient for my needs and I don't plan to spend any more on it until or unless something breaks :)

No longer saw the point for the limited number of games. Dont see the point of vista yet or dual core. My 3700 sd can happily make a dvd and do another function while I do it so no real need. I hope to get another 2 years out of the current set up. The next one will be mid range.

I seem to have quantity and not quality as I work in computer support with other geeks and they always upgrading and I'm always after a bargain :D .

my top rig is a shuttle Intel 2.4c, 512 DDR with 9800pro - made from new
My PC laptop is an Intel 1.5m, 512 DDR with Ati 9700pro - brought from new
my mac (mainly used at the moment) is the black mac book thats been upgraded to 1.5 gig of memory.

I seem to go though machines like theres no tomorrow but thoose of the ones I have managed/want to keep, I sold about four machines last year, two of them are higher spec than my main rig at the moment, but I never seem to make much profit.

I'm a classic gamer thats still into my Zelda, Street Fighter ect... I'm rarely excited by first person shooters expect for the unreal tournament series so I never need anything that great as it would be just wasted.

Next purchase is a mac mini.

not really a GDer but PC's have gone off. Used to get a New GFX card every 6months or a year at the latest. Still using a Geforce 6800GT (AGP bought very near release)

Yeah I have really, must be at least 2-3 years since I upgraded anything in my PC. My current rig is as follows.

Athlon 2500XP+
2GB PC3200 RAM
Nvidia 6800GT

I suppose I could upgrade the CPU and MB fairly cheaply giving me an alright system once again, but seeing as I barely use it these days I don't see the point.

anyone who calls a PC a rig needs to get out more!!

i upgrade my pc from time to time just depends when i feel like it. always buy from OcUK though...

I'm about to build (my first) full computer. :p

I decided about a year ago that it had to be done really as I want to make sure I have a system that I will have built, and thus be able to upgrade more easily.

I am going to be spending a fair amount on it, and I am looking forward to the use I get out of it.

The thing for me is that I don't actually do much on the computer other than use the Internet. I do not play games (I can't with this ATi Radeon 9800), and I don't do anything that requires too much power. I could survive with my current system (it is fine for anything I do [it boots fast, and the general performance is good], but I want to change it).

Computers are one of my main hobbies (probably one of my only [I only have two hobbies really :p]), and therefore I am willing to spend money on them.

Computers have been my biggest expense so far in life, beginning with the purchase of this computer (£1100 [I paid about £700]) several years ago).

I am certainly interested in what is going on, even if it is not actually inside my computer. I like to keep up with the news on the major events for high-end computing, and that is one reason why I try to check some of the forums other than "General Discussion" on OcUK.

When I first joined these forums umpteen years ago I bought a GeForce2 GTS from MM.

It's still my best GFX card.

I've got a decent enough gaming system. Vista has been a complete let-down so I don't feel the need to rush out and move from AGP to PCI-E now, at least not until some decent DX10-only games come out.

and the Tinnitus used to get worse when I was in close proximity of my Overclocked Athlon Thunderbird which was cooled with a FOP 38 IIRC.

I remember when I first got my Alpha PAL, overclocked and no more noise! :D

Oh and pyro DDR3 is out in ordinary Ram form now, it is no longer just the preserve of graphics cards so that is something else for you to learn about. :)

I just had a look at the wiki article, how much bandwidth?!

What about you? Have you grown out of spending silly money on your system? Got another expensive hobby (girlfriend?) to waster your hard earned quids on?
I spent three months reading up on technology before building a PC in July last year and since then I've read virtually nothing and spent even less on my PC! Expensive hobby-wise, nothing really - I got a new car not too long, I'm moving into a new flat soon and I have multiple weddings and overseas trips in the next six months. Most of my spare money at the moment gets spent in the pub :D That reminds me, I must start putting something to one side.....

I got fed up upgrading every year just for the sake of it and seeing a small increase in performance, realised I was wasting money and there were other things that needed priority. Still on the 3700+ from 2005 only thing added since then is a new PSU and a GPU.

Also my next upgrade is going to be the most expensive ive ever done. Will need new RAM CPU MB GFX, and my monitor needs changing, keep looking at the cost and thinking ......nah.

Also agree about Vista being a big let down and the lack of titles and drivers.

I have a personal road plan for upgrading.. I don't upgrade as soon as a new technogoly arrives.

I upgrade my graphics card every 12 months and CPU every 2 years...

My next CPU upgrade is in October and I'll buy what ever is the best at that time.

I enjoy doing upgrades and tinkering with my PC every now and then, so no, I don't think I have got over the bug really. I definitely don't spend as much on it as I used to, or overclock or anything anymore, but that's basically because I'm at uni now and a) need to functioning and b) can't afford to replace anything if I borked it. Since getting into photography now, if I did have any money I'd put it towards a new lens anyway - the PC would be fairly far down the list. I used to spend most of my forum time in Genral Hardware and Overclocking, but as I can't speak knowledgably about the new stuff that everyone's getting, I've pretty much completely dropped out.

Over the years I've got through 6 entire PCs (I'm 19 btw), normally replacing something in each of them or doing an upgrade before moving to the next one. My current PC is a X2 3800, 2 Gb RAM, X1900XT, which in comparison to some of the new C2Ds is stupidly slow.

I put together my last PC a few years ago now and got rid of it a couple of years ago.

I now only spend silly money on Macs. :)
