How many GDers are still into high-end PCs?

Used to buy products just to get a better 3DMARK score and a 333fps in quake 3.

had a celeron 333 @ 500ish, p4 [email protected] then i got bored, bought a p4 2.53 cheap off ebay and that was the end of it. kept the p4 2.53 and Radeon 9700 for about 2 years. this remained stock clocked.
Then i bought an AMD64 3500+ and GeForce 6800GT and ran linux as my main os, again not overclocked as the only game I played was WoW.
kept that for 18 months then bought a MacBook Pro 2.16 c2d and sold the main computer - I'm an apple man now.

Well, I've still got my server which has just gone from a duron 800 to 1.2 tbird ;)

I go through phases yearly, usually towards the end/beginning of the year. The upgrades are only minor though. Last one was in March for an 8800GTS and an extra Gb of RAM.

My PC is definitely form over function nowadays.

Unless you are heavily involved in PC gaming or video editing, there's no real need for a "fast" PC any more.

Sssssssshhhhh! youre going to put OcUK out of business with talk like that ;) :p

Used to be well into computers, upgrading, reading up on new parts etc.

Since I got a job which involved being on a computer 8-9 hours a day I don't really touch mine at home. I do a bit of audio editing now and again which could be a bit faster but certainly not something worth spending £500+ for.

I fall in and out of it. I might go a year or two buying nothing, and then go through 2 rigs in the space of 6 months like I did this year.

Like some posts above, I'm a bit disapointed with new software like Vista. Compatibility seems to be a big problem atm. The industry is becoming a spin riddled racket. Games are suffering from a major lack of quality control - way too many bugs.

Funny enough, I'm not using my current rig as much as I thought I would. Still nice to have tho :) I may end up going down the console road for the sake of simplicity eventually.

I bought a new PC a couple months ago (a modest 1.8GHz Conroe)

It's quite unusual by OCUK standards... 2x 7600GS graphics cards, 4GB of RAM and a 500GB 2-disk RAID 1 array. All of this is wrapped up in an E-ATX borefest of a case that I only look at when I want to burn a CD... A few folks on MSN were so  why I chose the components I did.

The only games I play on it are LFS, Aces High and C&C 3 - and even that is no more than once a week, if that. The rest of the time it's used for web surfing, MSN and Outlook.

PC hardware really doesn't interest me in the slightest anymore. I only come out of the woodwork when there's some new CPU coming out (like the Conroe last year) that tickles my fancy.

I recently bought a fairly high-end system.

My 1st pc cost £2000~
It was a Dell 8300
1gig ddr ram
9800xt
P4 3.2 ghz
120gb HDD

My new 'un cost £700~
Antec 900 case
Asus P5B Deluxe
ATI HD2900xt 512MB
2GB DDR2 Geil
E6600
Artic Cooling HSF

thats a lot more for a lot less!

I brought a 500gb HDD and 580w Hiper seperately

So in answer to the OP questions:

No, I haven't grown out of spending silly money on my system :p
I do have a g/f, but her costs are minimal :D

still running all games on a 2 and a half year old rig, maybe another year before I upgrade. Until games start struggling at the lower end of settings I don't spend the money what's the point.

I am, and I don't know why. I enjoy gaming, video editing and 3d-modelling, but have no time to do any of the three. As I could use the money I spent on my latest c2d system with the latest graphics card elsewhere, I really don't know why I bothered upgrading. More money then sense.

i have always built my comp and done all the upgrading stuff but this time i bought a pre made one and its gonna be my last system i think, only going to upgrade anything when i really have to.im still into games quite heavily so will still use it loads but im getting into photography now and also have a house that needs its bills paying :)

The last time I built a top of the range system was around 2002. Since then I've decided paying £400 for a graphics card that is out of date the second I take it out of the box is ever so slightly retarded.

I'm quite happy with my mid range computer that cost a quarter of the price of a top line one and does absolutely everything I could hope for a good two years at a time.

What about you? Have you grown out of spending silly money on your system? Got another expensive hobby (girlfriend?) to waster your hard earned quids on?

I just never expected to see such a big difference in both speed and capacity!

Yup got a gf so a lot of my money goes on visiting her in NYC, mind you im racking up quite a few airmiles:p.

I still have my old watercooled rig which i spent loads of money on a few yrs but you know what, i havent even bothered putting it together so its just sitting in the corner of my room gathering dust. I use my laptop a lot more now, have been for the past few yrs but like you i have absolutely no clue on all this new technology. But im pretty sure i could still build a pc, just im rather lazy and too busy to devote any of my time to actually building one.

Also seeing as i have a xbox360 for gaming i dont see the point in having the top range pc anymore to play games...not that i did on my old rig.

Current laptop is a Dell XP1210 duo core lappy which is very quick and nippy, biggest advantage is that its very portable 12" screen and comes in at under 4 lbs. Much lighter than my previous 15" dell laptop.

I'm not into it anymore. I use my laptop for Football Manager and the usual internet stuff and thats it. My old rig which cost a fortune sits doing nothing, but it's way behind the times now anyway. I can't be bothered with the expense of upgrading just to get a game to run decent. I have a 360 for gaming, though I've been bored of gaming for a while now. Forza 2 has got my interest and I'm enjoying it, but I don't know how long that will last.

I realy cant be arsed with it anymore. My PC currently needs refilling with water for its cooling, but its such a hastle to do I'm considering going for some silent air cooling.

I seem to remember there was something special about the CPU I have in it, its an Opteron of some sorts and its running at a daft speed....but I cant remember what it is. Remember ordering it from Holland or something at the time....meh....I dunno.

Next time I need an upgrade, I'll have to switch to DDR2, and probably a different Socket (on 939 now IIRC) so I'm thinking I might just go for whatever OCUK's highest end bundle deal is, and whack that in the case. Cba overclocking it.

Not just for the sake of it like I used to. Before I'd upgrade just for games, but now I'll just run it on lower settings. I may upgrade to run Unreal Ed 4.0 and the new Crytek 2 engine properly but only for development and testing developed content so performance won't be too much of an issue. Gaming is now being shifted over to my 360/girlfriend's PS2.
