Bottom line is I fancy a 8800GTS with some OCing to get a cheaper GTX for about the £300 mark. Seems an alright price in comparison.

I wouldnt mind a new monitor but as I am sure some people here will appreciate its a lot easier to upgrade a gfx card without the other half finding out than it is replacing the "TV like device" that will be blatantly different ;)

Currently on a single 7800GTX 256mb.

thats simply just not true... (unless your gaming on an A64 3500+ or X2 4400) I game'd at 1280x1024 before swapping to a widescreen now 1440x900... and I use a 7950GX2 and I see plenty of performance difference over any other card even at 1280x that would warrant buying one of these cards, and the same goes for the 8800GTS... truth of the matter is I think some people are just jealous... if you have an opty @ 2.6+gig or an E6600+ then its not overkill to get a high end card for 1280x res at the worsed you can simply whack up the FSAA/AF to levels someone with a slower card couldn't even imagine playing at...

EDIT: Just noticed your CPU... even at 2.7 your gonna be CPU limiting that card... tho it would still be a great upgrade.

Well I play graw with max settings and aa and af full via drivers lowest fps I get is 71.

I play at that res and its great.

I have just got a BFG 8800 GTS and will be using it on my 19" TFT @ 1280x1024.

Im gonna be happy to just max everything out and have lovely FPS... :)

I can't see why its overkill at that res, you can max everything out with full AA/AF and get frame-rates in the hundreds, and at that res the card will last you a very long time. :)

This is what I think too, I bought a GTX to game at 1280x1024, and in dx10 when vista comes out. Hopefully at this res I will never have to buy another graphics card, well not for 3 or 4 years until they find excuses to put so much unecessary graphical crap in games which you just have to have, or dx11 comes out with some unmissable feature or other. Admittedly I don't think I would have bought one if I wasn't upgrading from a lowly 6800ultra. If I have a 7x00 I would have waited till vista came out which will no doubt please loadsamoney no end.

im planning on getting a 8800gts to run my lcd tv at 1360x768. will run every game with 16xAA and 16xAF and that will be brilliant.

bah, if only there were a way to force AA to work in pro evolution soccer 6. tried everything but it doesn;t seem to apply AA

Ive just installed mine... went from a 7800 GTX (256mb) to the 8800 GTS... very happy so far.

I have just run Company of Heroes, and whilst I get lower FPS than I used to, I am now getting 60 as an average but with the 16xAA/16AFQ... everything on max... looks sweet!

Also just played BF2 and 2142... again, all on MAX and it looks soooo nice no slow downs... so one happy customer here....

Even thinking a GTX wouldn't be overkill... its always nice to "know" you couldnt get it any better ;) hehe

you cant say itl be ok because you can have loads of AA etc because...

oblivion for example looks better at 1680x1050 without AA on my widescreen monitor than it does at 1280x960 with lots of AA

(not that i play without AA, im just saying)

Just so you know...

I upgraded from a BFG 7800GTX OC (256mb).... at max overclock I get exactely half the score I get with my new BFG 8800GTS (Stock)....

Its weird, the FPS in all games are exactly double... should give you all an idea of what to expect :)

my comment was based on the fact that at that res there are loads of cards that will play most games maxed out at 60+ fps. the 8800 is designed for 1600+ res, so it really is overkill. i also said "unless your going to upgrade your monitor", in which case it wouldnt be overkill.

Got a gtx for my vx924, very good combo of a big nice screen and uber amounts of power on standby.

Wont be upgrading my screen till someone does a near flawless 24"

Utter tosh. nVidia engineers didnt sit there going "hmm ok now we need to make a card for that gaping hole in the market of people gaming at 1600x1200 res and bigger...."

They simply designed the fastest card possible at the time. With many games from the last couple of years the 8800GTS CAN do at 1600+ but there are still many games that the 7800GTX cant do at 1280x1024 at max with what I would consider acceptable FPS (40-50 min).

Being able to have v-sync and constant 60fps would be awesome, but I have to disable v-sync in order to make things smooth.

i say go for it. if u got the cash buy it and enjoy the ride. Yes it will loose value with time. yes it is expensive but so does every single piece of gear including R600 when its out. If people did not buy new hardware we would still be playing rock paper and sissors
