How many miles is too many?

Got over 120k on the ZS, these days mileage is nothing. I'd just be wary of oil changes, as oil strainers can sludge up, and oil starvation usually equals new engine.

...As my friend with a Saab found out. Not pleasant noises

do you have a strut brace on your z3? stops a lot of creaking due to making the body stiffer.

No, but I have a proper roof

Tempted to invest in a strut brace at some stage. Sorts out the tramlining too apparently..

But it's a complete wreck and is currently off the road with a failiure large enough that you had to buy a complete replacement car to use whilst you fixed it.
