Just wanted to know, how many of you guys still use a CRT monitor? I personally use mine for the refresh rate. It fundamentally makes playing games easier when its that much 'smoother'; for games like Counter-strike, Call of Duty its mad how sharp you feel on 100hz+. The mouse reacts faster, its smooth as silk and thats something I haven't seen a TFT reproduce for me.

opinions!

I stepped up from a 21" Illyama CRT to my Dell2407WFP A04 and I don't regret it for 1 second. Colours are a lot better and smoother in game, Ive had this monitor nearly 2 and a half years and I couldnt be happier with it. CRT's give me headaches and hurt my eyes.

The differences between CRTs and TFTs are almost minimal now.

On sceens smaller than 24", you can get very decent image quality and extremely low input lag ( <5 ms) which is enough to compete with a CRT in terms of responsiveness.

On a CRT, you need to have a refresh rate of 75hz and over or you'll end up getting headaches, but on a TFT 60hz is all you need.

Plus the space a CRT monitor takes is easily 2 or 3 times more than a TFT.

TFTs have come a long way in the past 8 years or so. Try CS or COD on a new decent TFT and you'll notice it's not as bad as you think it is.

Meh, the pros outweight the cons by a long way imo. I would never go back to CRTs. Relics from the Cold War!

I recently started playing Quakeworld with a CRT again, main monitor was 22" TFT with a 17" CRT (manufactured January 1998!) plugged in for QW.

Got the Viewsonic 120hz TFT a couple of days ago so am seeing how that goes. It's obviously not going to be as good as a CRT from a technology standpoint but it means less hassle pushing monitors around my desk and of course the extra size is nice.

At work I've got a Compaq P1210 (22" CRT), bit of a shame really as I'd love to have that at home for gaming. Not only can it do 160hz but it's also 4:3 rather than 8:5 aspect ratio.

Why would you prefer 4:3 over 16:10?

I love my 24" *VA panel TFT, but i'm sure i used to be a lot better at games 10 years ago back on my crt.
Games are definitely more immersive, colours and sharpness are great and the extra res is awesome for work ... but every time i miss a HS in TF2 I can't shake off the nagging feeling that I regularly made harder shots than that playing CS on my CRT back in the day.

Then I think about how much hassle it'll be to find it and get it down my loft ladder, and how little desk space i'd have.

I use a flatscreen because my desk is about 70cm deep and having a 22" CRT with the desk against a wall won't leave nearly enough space for the rest of my crap.

Heat and space are the only downsides that I'm concerned about with CRTs. Apart from that...

I have a 19" CRT as my main screen (1280/1024 Max) and a 19" HP TFT (1600/1200 max)as my secondary screen.
The CRT cost me £120 over 5-6 years ago, the TFT retailed at over £500 about 3-4 years ago...
I have often though about changing the CRT to a decent widescreen TFT; but you can't beat the CRT for colour reproduction, which is important when working with pictures and web sites.
