Hello all,

So for all my fellow photographers, how many of you actually have a calibrated monitor?

I've been thinking about buying a monitor calibrator, but I'm not sure if it's worth it as my IIyama's have always seemed pretty bang on to me....

Bought a Gretagmacbeth "huey" a good while ago. Made a big difference.
Before hand the monitor was "cold and blue" afterwards, a lot warmer.
But, it took me a fair while to get used to the new look after being calibrated.

I calibrate by eye using charts and Adobe Gamma every now and then and I get a decent result from the lab I use so I don't really see the need for hardware calibration atm. When I get my own decent printer I will by a Spider :)

I haven't calibrated mine but i is pretty much spot on from the prints I have recieved. having said that its calibration out of the box was one of the reasons I got my monitor over a dell. :)

I got a Pantone Spyder off the bay and was supprised by just how much of a difference it made. One shot in particular looked like it was completly blown out but once I calibrated my monitor I went back to it and all the detail was there; its now one of my favourite pics

I use a ColorVision Spyder2 Express, but it didn't really make a big difference (seems I got my TFT configure fairly close on my own) but it was worth the money to confirm it was correct.

I look forward to the day when TFTs self calibrate!

Ive got a Dell 2405 which im pretty sure is quite accurate. My Xerox 192i though is deffinately slightly off with a green tinge. I wouldn't mind a proper calibrator, but im not sure if I could justify the cost for the amount of times it would be used.

I dont even know what one is, but can guess it calibrates the colour of your monitor etc.

but what about if people here could trust each other and we all chipped in and got one, the first person used it, then mails it to the next person, as I am guessing it is something you only need to use once?

bad idea?

mine cost me £40 off that well know auction site.
Gets used all the time, even though TFT's arent supposed to go out of calibration like a CRT can.

I got a loan of a mates Spyder for my Dell 2405. There was a difference between the calibrated and uncalibrated picture. I have checked it again since but it is still OK.

If you can borrow someones to calibrate it once, chances are if it's a TFT it'll stay OK.

I am definitely going to get one.

The last set of photos from my holiday all came out looking very different to what I expected them to look like when I sent them off to Photobox.

I have decided that before I send of the current lot I need to get some sort of monitor calibration tool.

Maybe just the Huey thingy for £70.

Well if enough of us chipped in then it really wouldn't cost much, but it's a factor of trust and how reliable people are.
