Hi guys,

Im tired and i can't find anything about points on a drivers license in the Sticky.

I got up at 3.30am this morning to drive down to cardiff, i was down a small street doing about 40mph when i noticed a Big Orange camera box lol, there were no signs telling me about speed camera's or the speed im allowed to do but i think i was caught in a 30mph doing 40.

On the way back from cardiff i was doing 80mph when i came round a corner and there was a Scamera fan sitting in a laybye with its back doors closed, pointing away from me..

Now ive only been driving for 1 year and a bit... will i lose my license ? :(

quite possibly if the camera was loaded in the 30 (these dont always have film in) you may be lucky with the scamera van i THINK they can only monitor one lane at a time although im not 100% on that.

if both have caught you id imagine youd get 3 points and £60 fine per offence...you sure it wasnt your dad driving the car? ;) as 6 points in 2 years means your license will be revoked and youd go back to learner status and have to reset your theory and practical test

IIRC, If there are no speed limit signs in a urban area I believe it is a 30mph limit by default, and I think lamppost spacing (200 yards) has something to do with it as well.

If the Mobile Van rear doors were pointing away from you (?) then you'll be fine unless you were still speeding going past the back doors when the camera could 'see' you. However, IIRC, if the rear windows were closed, or it was raining, then you cannot be done for it.

TomTom + PocketGPS database is your friend. :)

I all depends on where you live obviously but a lot of places run speed awareness courses now. You can only do 1 course per 3 years I believe but is saves you getting points on your licence. I've got one booked for a couple of weeks time. Its only £75 where I live which is only £15 more expensive than the fine and you don't get the points on your licence.

I was driving a company pickup :(

Tom Tom Was sitting on the dash :)

The camera van was like this...

Im tired so please excuse my super rubbish paint drawing thing.

Does the speed camera not point out of the rear of the camera van? And therefore if it was in the direction you're indicating, it must've been monitoring traffic in the opposite direction?

6 points a think your allowed in your first 2 years of driving me thinks, correct me if im wrong

You're allowed 5 points. A sixth point will see you lose your licence if you get it within 24 months of passing your test.

I get one of those vans parked outside my house every so often. I always thought they monitored the traffic coming towards the back of the van not going away.

yup they got you driving towards the back of the van. they take a front on photo so you cannot say you duno whos driving the car..although they have been known to take rubbish photos occasionally

1 tip. do not speed in or around cardiff. the amount of vans and permanent cameras is a joke :/

haha yeah that's so true. Have noticed with the A470 that it's now 50mph near the M4 turn off. I bet there will be a few camera vans hanging about there.

iirc, if I can remember that road correctly, the police van will be inside a building. :p

The road ive tried to draw is the Shrewsbury Bypass :)

I also drove down the M4 and M5 IIRC,

and the A470.

My very kind mum has offered to say she was driving on the way home though :D
