How many Raspberry Pis do you have and what are they used for?

How is it overkill? If it costs the same or less and uses the same or less power, why does it matter?

Because LMS doesn't need much CPU horsepower, it ran pretty well on a single core ancient 300 mhz NAS (when I had a smaller library)

The picoreplayer OS itself is about 100MB

LMS on Windows was never great as Perl in Windows very hoggy, also the new one seems to have issues with auto start (something to do with Strawberry Perl) so it's not worth it with Windows + LMS. LMS used to be a dedicated Windows service, rather than an application that loaded after Windows start.

Quick look at N100 PC £300- that's triple the price, I wouldn't want to spend that just to get music server up.

I've got this on a 2.5" SSD

 
Just tried Lyrion on the gaming PC, again same problems with auto start.

For headless unit, would be unacceptable having to remote desktop everytime to manually start the service on a boot up

Wouldn't you just leave it on? How often do you expect a service/os/power issue?

:edit: uh oh I think I've misread (lies, I didn't read at all) the above, ignore if your entire point is running lms on windows=bad

That's why I bought the Pi, I had LMS on the Synology (EOL so 8.0.0 was final non official version) tried LMS on the Windows laptop, strawberry perl is needed auto start as service wasn't working ..so looked into a pi was recommended picoreplayer and happy with it. Can connect remote via phone LMS, PC etc.

Could have got a pi3/pi4 but I read pi4 had issues, also with pi5 being new picoreplayer support will last much longer, so £100 is good price..considering cost of things like roon (which would need to be on a PC anyway)

You know that mini pcs don't have to run Windows? Also you've defeated half the point of the raspberry pi - it's low power usage if you are turning it off and on all the time.

You don't have to buy an N100. Used dell optiplex micro, Lenovo tiny or HP elite desk mini pcs have been available for ages from about £30 if you don't mind older specs.

What OS on PC has LMS built in, less than 100MB, very simple setup (literally all done within 10 minutes) and a native plugin in LMS to remotely connect to headless unit?

Own four Raspberry Pi's:

  • RP 1 (model B) from 2014 = redundant
  • RPi 2 (model B) from 2015 = redundant
  • RPi 3B+ from 2018 = Pi-Hole & Unbound DNS Server
  • RPi 3B (model A+) from 2021 = MiSTer MT32-Pi hat

The RPI 3B+ has just in the last few weeks come out of long retirement as a Pi-Hole & Unbound set-up. It was going to be temporary, but over the last few days one of my small mini PC's (Beelink U59 Pro) decided to die (GPU keeps crashing which causes the whole PC to lock-up) so I've had to do some thinking on whether to keep the RPi in situ, or replace the Beelink mini PC. For now I've spent a little bit on a new power supply, copper heatsinks and case for the RPi 3B+ as it does get a bit warm without any cooling. I know Raspberry's Pi's aren't great value atm, but I'm mildly tempted to jump-up to a RPi 4 1GB for a Pi-Hole & Tailscale duties (this is where I think a RPI 3 may struggle). But we shall see.

The older ones I should really sell on, or do something with.

Pi4 - PiHole & Unifi controller
Pi4 - Plex client
3B+ - Squeezebox (PiCorePlayer)
3B+ - WeeWX
3B+ - CUPS Pi Print
3B+ - Network UPS Tools - This was just a project with a UPS in the garage, where most of the Pi's are kept along with a Ubiquiti 24-port POE switch running the CCTV cameras. It doesn't do anything other than show me a nice graph about input battery level and load.

I think that's all of them.

I've got a few 3B+ not being used, with one of them I'm considering as a totally random project, using it as a seismograph with "Raspberry Shake". It's quite costly, but it is something I've always thought would be fun to have, especially given that I'm running one as a Geiger counter. Then I would have to consider where to put it so that it didn't measure a cat jumping off the fence as an earthquake!
 
I have a 1B somewhere in a drawer, but my 2B is being used as a NUT master, with my unraid box and 2x pihole/unbound wyse boxes being the slaves.
 
I own three (two 4s and a 3b).
Currently, one is my main streamer (with an Allo Digione Signature HAT) in place.
The second is a streamer for my 2nd system. This one has a DAC HAT on board.
The third is currently unused by I have played around with TV tuner and router software.

You should get Proxmox installed on one and combine them.

I've not heard of that, I'll have to look into it.

I have now setup Raspberry Shake - A small seismometer screwed onto the solid concrete floor of the garage, the garage that is away from the house and road, so not likely to get any significant external movement.
