With current drivers from both camps.

7970 is = GTX 680
7970 GE > GTX 680

The only way GTX 670 will catch the 7970 or GTX 680 is by overclocking. Unfortunatley if you go that route be prepared to play to OC lottery and remember the 7970 and GTX 680 can overclock as well.

Of course I am referring to games here, not benchmarks. You will get outliers that show the GTX 670 faster than a HD 7970 but those are rare (Assassins Creed III) for example. In general the 7970 is around 10-15% faster than a GTX 670.

My own testing of 7970 GE vs GTX 680 shows the 7970 to be ahead by around 15% on average in games.

For a GTX to match a 7970 it needs around 120-150 MHz core advantage and a very large VRAM verclock.

For example at the following clocks both cards are roughly equal in my own testing.
HD 7970 ~ 1170 (this is good/above average for a HD 7970)
GTX 680 ~ 1310 (this is an excellent overclock on a GTX 680)

Hmm.

The main thing that's bothering me now is the amd drivers. Skyrim is still not fixed! Ill be ordering my new pc soon. I've read the 670 is not far behind the 680. 5% tops not 10%?

Between 5 and 10% in games depending on how good a booster you get :).

Skyrim isn't fixed? It's fine on my 7950. What's the problem with it?

One of the lighting patsh was removed in previous drivers. I think it was fixed in 12.11 b7.

The GTX 670 was only 5%-10% slower than a GTX 680 in less demanding games, more demanding games show that gap start to widen. Also the more demanding games have tended to favoured Tahiti over Kepler, that has been the case since Kepler was released.

Have alook at the various benchmarks on Computerbase.de to see the gap between 670 and 7970 in Skyrim with Mods. I only linked Skyrim as you mention it on this thread, so I assume it is a game you will play.

This is using the latest drivers from both camps.

Skyrim with the new drivers artifacts everywhere, when outside its really bad!

Well since its fixed that could make it easier choice!

The 670 seems to be really struggling there :\

I see the 7970 at the same price as the 670s so its kinda weird to pick a 670 if buying card alone, the 670 comes with the setup ive chosen, i wonder how much to change to a 7970....

Zero artifacts in Skyrim here on 12.11 B6 and at 1250/1800 too....

In my experience most people have an innate preference for either AMD or NVidia. The 7970 and 670/680 are all so close in terms of performance (i.e. they all have enough grunt to run the latest games with all the eye candy on at high resolutions) that it's usually more your preference for one particular brand that's the decider :) It takes a major price/performance advantage to make most people switch brands.

I was thinking about a 7950 and try shave £100 off the tag and grab an i7 im now puzzeld!

This is my system so far

Corsair Graphite 600T Midi Tower Case in Silver
Intel Core i5 3570K Processor Overclocked to up to 4.7GHz Maybe a i73770k?
Noctua NH-D14 Ultimate Performance Quiet CPU Cooler
Asus P8Z77-V Motherboard
8GB PC3-10666 1333MHz DDR3 Memory (2 x 4GB sticks) Not sure if faster ram would be better?
Gainward GeForce GTX 670 2048MB Graphics Card Maybe a 7970? And a different brand.
240GB Corsair Force 3 Solid State Drive
2000GB 7200RPM Hard Disk - 6Gbps
LG Blu-Ray ROM / DVD-RW Combi Drive (Blu-ray playback software supplied for Windows 7 only)
Corsair CX 750W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified PSU
£1050

What would you change?

Btw i play at 1920x1200 so the difference between 1080 and 1200 could be a lot?

I game at 1920x1200 with both a GTX680 and a 7870. The 7870 handles every game I play fine at this resolution, so a 7950 should be more than sufficient.

But rusty BF3 spikes? ;) lol.

I know im still waiting for quotes now.

One thing that could change prices is the motherboard is the Asus P8Z77-V Motherboard worth the extra 50 quid? I know it helps with OCing but 50 quid?

Also rusty how noisy is your case? I was gonna get the HAF X but its ugly as hell! Im moving from a Cosmos S so i kinda like the look. Shame i have to sell the case when i sell my PC or id keep it :(

Not worth it under any circumstances when you're on any kind of budget.

For advanced users I'd say it is. Gives more BIOS options. If you're not going to be tweaking and changing then you can save some cash here.

Not noisy at all. To be honest when you're buying a case then how it looks is what should be the deciding factor. If you don't like the look of it then all of the top end cases will cool sufficiently so you'll be able to find one which looks nice to you as well.

Personally, I love the rugged look of it :)
