How much better would the Asus ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card, than my current BFG8800gt oc2 GPU clock 675? And also how much better or not is the 5770 than the nvidia GTX 260 series, always seemed to have trouble with the ATI boards and get on better with NVIDIA! Any help would be much appreciated.

Yes but people also keep overlooking the fact that the 4870 1gb is a dreadful overclocker...and the 5770 is not. The 4870 1gb is lucky to get past 800-810mhz while the 5770 can hit 1GHz easily.

Like i said before these 5770 are great and they ovclock well, however people are running like 1030/1400 the card does not artifact or crash and they think it fine. These cards throttle so you think your stable but your get less performance then before. They have sweet spot which is fun to find...on the 3 5770 i had they were awesome at 1000/1305 clocks and they all repsonded the same. That was with 9.11's mind not sure if 9.12s tell a diff tale

I do tend to agree the bandwidth hinders performance quite a bit. It seems like the 5770 is awesome in crossfire but in single card the 4890 is the one to pick for sure.

Could be ahead of the 4870's now with the 9.12's, as those have probably made the 1 or 2 frames up on it, as supposed to have given the 5770's quite a boost.

Guru3D review of a 5770 with a 1Ghz core getting beat by a STOCK CLOCKED 4890... and the 4890 can hit 1Ghz core as well.

Seems hit and miss to me here is my summary

  • Far Cry 2 - 5770 1fps faster
  • Call of Duty World at War - 4890 4fps faster
  • Hawx - 4890 1fps faster
  • Warhead - 4890 2fps faster
  • Mass Effect - 4890 10fps faster
  • Brothers in Arms - 5770 9fps faster

coupled with the improved IQ with the 5 series, lower power consumption, lower temperature and DX11 ready. I think I'd actually be tempted to stick with the 5770

Another thing that most people overlook with the 5xxx cards, is that they handle dx10 special effects much easier. So although you may get lower fps at times than a 4870, it will slow down much less when there are huge explosions etc. Adding to this they will overclock much better than the 4xxx series, you will most likely have smoother performance than a 4890 half of the time, despite lower fps.

You would say that gurusan, you have a 4890 lol. If you look around some of the forums at peoples experiences, and from personal experience 5770's slow down less in games like mw2, with huge explosions with lots of particle effects.

Having a 4890 has nothing to do with it. I just don't understand what would make the 5770 handle effects better as it's basically a memory bandwidth starved 40nm 4890 with a few extra features

Also MW2 is a DX9 game.....
