How much do you want to be paid?

Had a email from a prespective employee asking "What are your package expectations"

Now this is a hard one to answer, I know I need to go high but am currently unaware of the other benefits i.e car/car allowance etc and how this could affect the figure.

Anybody got any clever tips on how to word the reply?

employee? or employer?

Wouldn't the obvious thing to do be to value how much your previous job package was worth in terms of time put in, money gained, benefits etc and then lump it into one eg if this new job has no big benefits, same as previous company but they want you to work 10 hours more and you previously earnt 70k, ask for 80k and see what they reply with.

Failing that: 1 Billion dollars flat out sum.

heh i thought it would be a slightly odd way to phrase it if it had been a prospective employee. Just have a look at industry averages and pretty much tell them what you've told us.

You don't want to put an exact figure on it because it's contingent on other benefits, however you know your worth and feel that the value you will bring to the company will deserve recognition. Ask them to outline some of the potential benefits they would be looking at offering you if you chose to take up employment with them?

i've always ignored the question if on a written application, or just left it as "competetive"
then see what comes your way as a start to negotiations

If in an interview then you should already have an idea of the 'package' they are offering if not the actual salary.

'bout tree fiddy

nah seriously - if you have to then give them a range around what you'd like to be paid - at least it allows you a better chance of falling into the bounds of what they had in mind in terms of pay and you can push for the higher end of the range if they like you at interview.
