How much life is in my 470?

Not off topic at all id say given the topic is "how much life in my 470" and the cooling performance of any high power electrical device will influence its lifespan greatly.
Sometimes I wonder at the people who spend more time splitting hairs over little things like a slight ambiguity of the forum title and post contents and wether or not to bump threads or if someones post is invalid not because of content but because the thread is old. Anyhoo that last sentence is off topic so il correctly refer us back to topic. lol

Why would want to change your 470 when it does exactly what you want it to do just because theres a newer version, do you do the same with your car? Chop it in everytime a newer version comes out? Think about it, if its fits your needs theres nothing wrong with it

I didn't say I wanted to change it, just wanted to know how it stacks up against the newer models.

Another option is to add a second at some time for sli, running two here and they handle anything with ease at 1920x1200, run pretty cool for what are meant to be hot running cards, 1dle at 30-29, load in game at 76-75, good case cooling really helps with theese cards.

Case airflow makes a massive difference with these, with a poor/average case they easily go over 80C. With good airflow mine stay <77C.

Bit of ghetto modding helps as well,:D but thankfully my lian li a70f has excellent airflow, dual 140mm intakes but ive added a 120mm fan into the remaining 5.25 bays for extra intake.

Yep agreed a good case makes all the difference. I have a Coolermaster HAF 912 Plus outfitted with two Coolermaster MegaFlow 200mm and two Noctua NF-S12B FLX 120mm. My old case used to be so bad with all 80mm fans, often id have to remove the side of the case... says it all really.

To op I recently got an Msi 470GTX and decided to put a Gelid Icy Vision cooler on it. I did a fair bit of research before commencing and found the process testing but not difficult, took around 2hrs, I was being very carefull. Good tips were to heat the card up with a good gaming session\stress test before commencing as it helps in removing the backplate screws. There is some locking glue on the screws and all but one came off no problem with a new Phillips No 1 and reasonable pressure applied. The last screw was more stubborn but did loosen after applying more force. The Gelid cooler runs full whack, 1800rpm, all the time but is still quieter than the stock fan. I had a fanmate lying around so put that on and at the lowest setting, around 1100rpm, card idles 26-31c depending on room temp and maxes at 57c after two loops of Heaven 2.1 benchmark. I've clocked this card up to 876\1752\1674 @ 1.075v 63c is as hot as its got, wonder if I can get it to 900! At that OC the 470 is up there with the 570 and has plenty of grunt yet. For me the 6950\6970 were disappointing and if you look at the Anandtech benching comparison site its only a few frames between them and the 470. Enjoy your card, its plenty good enough for a while yet and I would recommend one of the aftermarket coolers as it makes a tremendous difference and makes the 470 the card it should have been if only Nvidia had put a decent cooler on it in the first place.:D Oh and I thought I should add i run the card at stock settings when gaming, in Fallout NV, as its more than enough.:)

Don't forget its designed to cope with the heat, even with stock cooler, 72'C is ok, my 470 profile 60% at 800/1600/2000. Get it OC'd, again my 470 profile 60% at 850/1700/2000 about 82'c no probs at all, running a custom loop now 470 peaks at 50'c 850/1700/2000, use MSI AfterBurner.

Anything over 800/1600/2000 your very close to a 580.

well to be honest you should get a couple of years out of that card
i myself have only just upgraded from an bfg 8800gts to a Gigabyte GeForce GTX 460 SUPER OC
don't recon i'll need to upgrade that long after my other components
if your card isn't struggling with the games u play then why change it ?

Thanks for all the replies guys, much appreciated:)

About the modding, can't do that as ive bought a pre-made system from the kind people at Ocuk, if i were to change something it would void the warrenty:(

Overclocking the 470 will not void your warranty but you are right, modding the card by adding an aftermarket cooler will void any warranty. As to whether it'll void the warranty on just the card or the whole system I'm not sure where overclockers stand. As above do your research about how to fit the cooler and prevent damage and you should be fine. If your card was to fail and need returning to either the retailer or manufacturer you could easily just fit the stock heatsink and shroud. Do it properly and there's no way they'll no, not to mention they won't take the card apart themselves.
