How much money do you spend on food a day?

Whatever my budget is I go over it,food is so expensive now days. Inflation has been unreal.

The earlier post of grand a month for a family I find very believable.
A very simple example, I bought a head of broccoli today for 60p, that would have been 45p just a few weeks ago. A small thing, but it's cumulative. That alone had gone up 25% in a very short space of time.
We have got used to very cheap food here, I think that's changing now. In the not too distant past food was a huge part of peoples daily costs.

I went to the coop to get some sandwich stuff, crisps and snacks, got less than £5 change from £20 and I eaten most of it in a single day.
That's what you get for going to the coop, it's for the retired people with no mortgage, good pensions and no need to worry about money :D

It’s probably because in part they are all flown in now as it’s winter in the northern hemisphere. A few weeks ago I was in Taiwan and it was 30c.

We must be 1k a month easy too, for family of 4 without alcohol.

Never budget for food just buy what we want when we want, don't get take aways hardly ever.

I don't have a clue how some of youse are managing to get by on so little, must be a constant battle.

It’s easy, you buy what you need instead of “oooh, that’ll be nice” and grab it.

And I eat well...

Currently around £20-30 a week for me.

I think the cheapest I ever ate was about 10 years ago when I was utterly broke towards the end of my masters and managed about 6 weeks on £3.50 a week. Wasn't much fun

Sounds like us, although we may have take-out once every two or three weeks, as there are just us two, our monthly layout is more like £420 - £450 per month, including alcohol.

I feel your sense of wonder, thank Christ I’ve always had the health and strength to go out and earn a reasonable living, and buy whatever we feel like eating, within reason.

breakfast - make my own granola 1.9kg + cheap all-bran + cheap low fat yoghurt, comes to £16.50 (ish) for the 28 days

lunch - fried egg sandwich, eggs + bread for 6 days a week, for 28 days worth comes to £5.00 (ish)

tea - roast chicken for the week days £3.30 + veg &/or rice or salad. 28 days comes to £26/27 (ish) (might do a sausage/ meatball casserole sometimes, comes to same cost)

saturday tea - half a 14" supermarket fresh made counter pizza. 28 days worth comes to £7.00

sunday tea - roast @ parents. comes to £1/2 (i supply pudding :p)

food is fuel, i get what i need and i'm not a glutton, never hungry, not losing /gaining weight so...

i also don't buy the expensive brand stuff, something like yoghurt can go from what i spend, 45p per 500g pot (i buy 4), up to £2.x for the same amount (500g pot). with the pizzas, i could get through a full 14" no problem, have done in the past, but was absolutely stuffed, stopped doing it, felt better after eating and saved money. i also don't buy something i'm not going to eat and that will get left in the freezer for weeks/ months. i don't dawdle around the supermarket going up and down every aisle buying things i don't need to. i go in with a plan of what i need, get it and get out.

of course there may be up to £5 on things like butter, salt + pepper etc too but either way £55/60 is easily a manageable budget for a single person.

:)

You might not live forever scrabbling around for the cheapest items possible, but it will feel like you have.
I couldn’t imagine picking up a box of cereal, for £2.40, pursing my lips, taking a sharp intake of breath, and saying, £2.40? I’ve seen it elsewhere for £2.39, now where was that?

Where do you even get a chicken for 16 quid?
There's not a single butcher around my mums part of London that could.. Where do you live.

I’ve no idea, I never buy chicken, unless I buy slices of it in the deli section, but my wife occasionally buys a cooked chicken in Tesco, she said that depending on size they’re around £5.00 and up, they last us two a couple of days, but maybe you mean a chicken from a butcher, are they cheaper?

Horse is delicious. I have it all the time when in France.

Et moi aussi, j’aime bien la viande de cheval, ma femme, pas tellement!

Family of 3 spend £100 a week shopping. Tried many things previously doing the online shop but they always **** up and miss things or tend to sub a lot of stuff (weirdly when you go in they have them in stock)
Tried different supermarkets etc etc.

Not overly fussed as we have a healthy budget my biggest concern is stopping our daughter eating **** instead of healthy meals but that battle is never ending.

I work in the city too and close by are the likes of greggs, kfc etc so now and then i spend £10 or so on lunch.

Mounts up pretty fast but life is boring enough as it is :D

We do an Ocado shop roughly once a week, usually spend about £50 for two of us. That includes work lunches for me and usually about 5-6 dinners for both. We cook from scratch most nights and eat out maybe once a week - lunch or dinner at the weekend or something. We have a good midweek menu planned, to the point it's a bit annoying if something comes up :p

We buy bits and pieces occasionally but not always, we always have backup stews, curries etc. in the freezer. It's all about prep. It might sound stingy but once you can cook a good repertoire of meals it's not that hard to organise yourselves. It's also about not buying silly things like £6 chicken breast when thighs are way cheaper and way tastier. Not buying expensive beef for a stew etc. And we cook very nice food. 5mins one evening to decide on a meal plan and what to order. It means when we eat out we don't need to worry about going somewhere nice and spending £85 for two of us, which is pretty easy in London. I'd say we hit about £100-150 a week depending on what we're doing. That includes eating out.

Which supermarket do you go to? Sainsbury;s fresh made pizza is at least £4 for I think a 14incher - that's just one :). I consider that pretty cheap. £7 for four 14" pizza sounds very cheap.
I tend not to buy cheap ingredients if I feel there's a nutritional benefit to spending more. If you look at the contents you'll often find why it's cheap. So, organic chicken breast, at least free range eggs if not organic. Wild fish rather than farmed etc where possible. Cheaper packed foods often contain more salt and/or sugar
