They came up as an advisory on my MOT so thought i may aswell sort them sooner rather than later. Bought them and took them to whats usually a pretty cheap garage and i was thinking maybe £40 tops for the lot. The guy said £25 for the fronts, and £40 for the backs on the basis that the handbrake would have to be removed? This sound right?

Never had new brake pads on my car before, anything i should do to "bed" them in ? or is this brake disks?

MG ZR btw.

Sounds ok to me, get a quote from some where like kwik fit and I know where you will end up.

When you have new brakes just take it easy for a few days / couple of hundred miles, they will tend to not have as much stopping power as they shape to the shape of the discs and will often have a sharp bite.

Do it yourself. You will never learn otherwise and it will help you in the future. I kinda jumped in at the deep end on my first car. Replaced the calipers, disks, pads and bled the system all in one go. The disks were warped though and there was a lot of mess but it was fun doing it. At least when you do it yourself you know you have done a good job rather then taking someones word for it.

Discs and pads are not difficult and will save you a fortune if you DIY. There are some jobs it's worth paying to get out of, that's not one of them :)

That is a fair price. The backs are a pain as the the caliper will need to be wound back which is touch and go.

Brakes are easy to do, but are very safety critical. If you aren't fully confident, get the garage to do it!

Or do it yourself then get a friendly garage to check it over for £5.

touch and go? get a caliper wind back tool. solved.

dont touch it unless you understand what youre doing and as has been said, its not over technical on a rover. id say there is more of a chance that a garage would ruin your car because they just dont give a damn about it

I changed the rear pads on my wifes Honda Civic a few months ago, Honda would have charged around 80 to do the job, the parts cost me around 20 and even without having the correct tools a few hours later and job done. Learnt a lot and I think I could do them again in under an hour when if comes to changing them again.

Had to wind the rear pistons in which wasn't as easy as the instructions, in the end I used a flat cold chisel with a spanner on the end, worked a treat. :)

it always helps having the right tools. as you said, next time you could do it a lot faster, imagine how much easier it would be with the right tool to put the piston back in lol

Yep, can't agree more, I've decided that in future I'll spend the money saved by doing the work myself on the tools required.

totally. ive got a kick ass set of tools, i cant think of much i couldnt tackle. did a cv boot on my golf the other day, fitted eibach anti roll bars on an audi the other week, put a new gearbox on my other golf over xmas.

all the jobs ive done i know have been tip top, everything torqued to the right setting as ive got nice torque wrenches too.

Getting the pads changed is so cheap why bother doing it your self?

Had new pads all round on the Neon in the summer last year and it was £70

Pads would have cost me £60+ to buy.

no one gives a free lunch in this world, esp not garages lol

to make that worth their while (i doubt they did it from the kindness of their heart) i expect they put considerably cheaper (possibly inferior) pads on there for you

Pads start at and I couldn't quite believe this myself but £7 for a set of rears for my wifes Civic, these obviously weren't Honda originals but if the garage wants to make a quick buck they can as once fitted the punter can't really see what's been fitted. I opted for a set that cost around £20 which according to my mate were decent.

I doubt that the garage would have changed your pads for only £5-10 profit in all honesty unless you knew the owners.

I never understand why people feeling caliper winding is such a pain. I just use my caliper winding tool which cost £10-£15 and have never had a problem with it. Biggest pain I have found on the rear brakes is where you have to adjust them up with an alan key.

Dude i once took my car to Fossit and Thorne in bourne, got Discs and Pads on a 1.8si escort for £95 including fitting.

They had the job done in 25 minutes.

What is the point when you can get stuff supplied and fitted that cheap?

I got two headlight bulbs supplied and fitted for free at a random garage in grantham before christmas because one of the headlights blew.
Yes its only like a £5 worth of stuff, but you know you dont have to know somebody to get a good deal.

Its amazing what the price for things is when you are polite and friendly to people.
