how much should one spend on a card?

Whilst I have only bought 1 card (was donated my current 8600GT which, and am awaiting my 5850 to arrive) I know I couldnt ever part with more than £200 on any single piece of hardware.

Maybe £230 if its a decent video card that is on offer, but typically, my ideal budget is £150-£200.

Depends on how good the cards are. I've bought:

Voodoo1 £90
Voodoo3-2000 £80
GF2MX £113
GF4-Ti4200 £120
9800SE AIW £170?
6800 £176
6800GT (move to PCI-E) ~£210
7900GTO £158
8800GTS-320 ~£190
GTX280 £240

So aside from some early cheap purchases I generally spend around the £150-200 mark, with my current GTX280 being an exception I made because at the time that was a very good price for pretty much the top card on the block - it's served me well as it is still going strong well over 2 years later.

But as I said, it depends on what cards are available at what price, I don't really have a budget per se. I'd spend £400 on a card if I thought it was good value, e.g. something with 3x the performance of a GTX580. I've bought a lot of midrange enthusiasts cards because they have been what I considered good value at the time, or I've been able to get a good sale price on my old card.
