How much WILL you pay for a graphics card?

I'd class the 6800XT as high end as its not far off a 6900XT tbf.
So would I, that's the card I wanted but could not find one in stock so I got a 6900XT as lot of places have them in stock. I meant I would not pay 700+ for a 6700XT/6800 level card.

I'd put the 3090, 3080ti, 3080, 6800, 6800XT, 6900XT all as high end cards with the 3060/ti, 3070/ti and 6700XT in the midrange bracket, as for low the end apparently that doesn't exist anymore.

£425 for a 3060ti £500 for a 6700xt is my limit but I'll only buy at that price if the price drops stall at that level. Already have a Ps5 so I can wait.

It's not a set amount but buying the x80 every other generation seems to be working out. This generation more than ever as I got an FE in December which has mined far more than it's original cost and is still could be sold for more than I paid for it.

If the 3080FE would become readily available and still at 649, then I think i'd get one. I can't see myself ever paying more than that though, and tbh I'm relatively happy to stay a gen or too behind.

I bought a 1030 GDDR5 version for £70 to play old games on (2nd rig) while I wait for prices to get back to normal. If necessary I am happy to wait for the Radeon 7000 series rather than pay these prices as my Vega56 can still play more demanding games, especially if FSR gets into more games

Ive always spent £450 on gfx cards over the last 20 years. My current card was the most I've spent £550 for an EVGA GTX1080 4 years ago. I really want a 3080 but I'm just going to make do as i'm reluctant to buy even at msrp

Also some people seem to have a misconception about pricing - the 3080 FE was £650, so for an AIB card add say £100 = £750, then add 20% VAT = £900. Some retailers are selling RTX3080's (in stock) for £1200 so that's a 33% (£300) markup over the estimated correct rrp

£650 MSRP already includes 20% VAT so why are you adding another 20% for an AIB card?

If the 3080 was in stock at launch I might have been willing to get it for the £650 MSRP. Now almost 10 months since release I don't think I'd be willing to pay more than £500 for it. I ended up getting a PS5 at launch for £360, which is fine for me at the moment so I'm not in a rush to upgrade.

I don't understand your calculation. 3080 FE is £649 including VAT MSRP. Are you factoring VAT in twice?

The £1200 tag on AIBs is due to demand being far more than supply.

Edit: I see @DeliciousStorage beat me to the VAT comment

Im always curious how 'new gamers' get into PC gaming now.
When my friends and I where starting to play, a £500 PC was all you needed to play the games we wanted. A Top end PC was about £1k.
Sure you needed peripherals too, but the cost difference between a console and PC didnt seem as massive as it is now.

Choosing between a £500 next-gen console or a £1500+ PC seems a hard choice to make in favour of the PC. That choice would have been made for me when I was young.

In proportional terms I don't think there's a huge amount of difference. Top end consoles used to cost half what they do now.
I don't know when you started out but if you go back 25-30 years, top end PCs were genuinely expensive if you consider their shelf life. Nowadays, you can buy a PC and run it for 3+ years. Back then, you were essentially forced into upgrading. CD-ROM drive because games were coming on cd. Bigger disk drive so you can install CD games. Soundcard so you can play cd audio. 3d graphics accelerator to enjoy new games. RAM upgrade. Another 3d gfx card because the old one can't handle new games 18 months later. CPU and Mobo (and possibly RAM/Case/PSU) because you are now bottlenecked on new GPU. Modem so you can go online. CD burner so you can burn all the stuff you downloaded. New monitor to replace that dodgy 14" CRT. Etc etc.

It depends what people earn. One weeks wages is my limit. 40 hours work.

If somebody earns 3090 money in one week, I can understand it perfectly. It's when it costs them 4 weeks wages that I scratch my head and think they're crazy.

This is a very good example. $500 to one person could be $2000 to another depending on value.

the rtx3090 is 1 weeks wages for me so I had no hesitation buying it but it could be a problem for many others
