Just wondering how often you change your handsets?. I tend to change yearly and just curious to find out about others.

When it dies.

Yeah this, I look out for signs of imminent death and then start researching for a new phone. I usually time is just about right, where the new phone comes not long before the old one becomes irritating to use for whatever reason. I've upgraded too early in the past and I've just really pined for my old phone back as I was so used to the hand feel and the way I had it set up after years of use. It's usually about 2 years at the moment.

What was your last phone? I don't remember having kept a phone for over a year. Sad I know ...

Depends a bit - I don't hurry but sometimes new tech that I actually want comes along and I will change earlier or later.

My last 3 main phones were 2008, 2011, 2015 - still using my Note 4 at the moment as my main phone. I'd have probably upgraded it by now as while it is still pretty much as new and does everything I need 5G support would be handy, the camera is a bit lacking and 1-2 other things I wouldn't mind having plus the fingerprint sensor seems to be slowly losing accuracy. But I just don't find most recent phones work for me.

I find too many newer phones are style over substance and it doesn't inspire me to change that often - I'd probably change more often if it wasn't for all the hurry towards non-removable battery, removing 3.5mm socket, removing SD card slot, silly curved, bevelled and notched screens, etc.

It was a Xiaomi Redmi Note 5, frankly insane value until it started to just turn off. I threw a lot of abuse at it so it's only fair for a sub £150 device. I saw the writing on the wall so took advantage of a Pocophone F1 deal, hopefully it'll bring similar value and it is doing well do far. Time will tell :p

Man you still rocking the note 4!that brings back a sense of nostalgia. That's actually the phone I kept the longest . I remember moving about with spare batteries in my bag and car . Now come to think of it, if I was ever to get a phone which gives me the same feeling as the note 4, I would keep it. I also think you're right, nowadays because of social media, we just end up buying phones all the time we don't need to change . I'm using a oppo find x2 and I am going to try and keep it untill at least December next year as have always changed handsets every year.

Hahaha I get you ..

Last phone I had for five years, had my current one for about a year. Old one is still working though, use it as a cycle computer and to watch TV on when playing games on the PC.

My last phone Galaxy a5(2017) i had for 3 years before upgrading to an M31 last month, before that 3had a Nokia with windows for about 4 years.

Every two year.

Always get flagship iPhone -> Wait 24 months for contract to run out -> Change to the next available flagship and sell the old one for ~1 year worth of dosh for the next phone :) That way it's not really that expensive to have the latest phone in the grand scheme.

TL;DR 3-4 years.

I usually just get something if I can find a contract that work out where the phone is actually free, not 'free' in marketing speak. Got the OnePlus 6T through some silly deal, with 90GB data, unlimited everything else, and 24 months of premium Spotify included all for less than the cost of the phone ~£599 or thereabouts. Will last me until I can't get a new version of the OS for it, so maybe 2 more years.

Mrs tends to get the year old iPhones (after they have tanked in value) when she feels that she has had the value from her old device, and the old ones gets passed down to child etc.
