Loads of mature students doing various higher national engineering courses at the college I'm at, a good few north of 40 too.

I'm 28 and in my 3rd year.

when i went, we had a 32 year old in our class. didnt really make a diffrence. i say go for it and slap any chav who gives you **** :D lol

I was 17 when I went to uni - I was one of the youngest there. Most people where mid to late 20s. Looking back I was young and foolish. I got on well with the older guys and thankfully their more mature approach to studying and assignments rubbed off on me. I don't think I would have passed let alone gone on to an Hons Degree if we'd all been 17-18 years old.

Embrace it, kids can learn a thing or two from people with some life experience.

Never too old, I have a lot of mature students.

The only thing is that if you want to do a BTEC, colleges receive less funding for 19+ year olds so you might find it harder to get on a course, as the places for 19+ are limited.

For the same level, people have mentioned the Access courses which are great, and full of people who also may be thinking they are 'too old' - so you end up studying with like minded people.

If you do get on a BTEC you will probably get annoyed with all the 17 year olds messing about ;)

Any sort of professional course (I teach AAT for instance) will have a massively mixed age group and again, a similar mind set as they will have paid a lot of money to be there, and have similar goals :)

Does anyone find it also effecting your self respect like going back to primary school at age 50 to learn 1+1 =2 etc or being regarded as a failure because your not in the position that the majority of the rest of your age group is in ie having a good career, family, house etc?

Your never too old, I didn't go to Uni till I was 24 finished at 28 had 6 years off (at work) and I'm now doing some more a levels for the fun of it as a private student. I'm 34.

Only thing I'm worried about is that I have to find a college to sit my exams, which means unless I can find an adult college which allows me to sit my a level exams I'm gonna have to do it with loads of 16,17 and 18 year olds.

I'll either turn up in a suit so they think I'm some kind of invigilator or I'll just do what I did when I was originally in college which was try and look up the girls skirts!

All win win if you ask me.

Nope. You're only a failure when you give up on something. Maths is a good example of a subject where you need the fundamentals to be able to understand the more complicated stuff. No one cares if it takes you twice as long.

Anyway, there's always someone more successful than you. Once you've got a good career and everything else that defines success using a particular metric the goalposts change and you can start judging yourself by a whole new set of people. Alternatively be happy and make the best of what you've got, doesn't make any difference in the end.

My definition of success involves spending as much time as possible sitting in my pants drinking beer. So far I'm failing pretty hard.

never? in my college there's so many grannies older than my grandma who is 74 now.. they can hardly walk and they still study ;]
