how to deal with a problem dog?

Just came back from visiting my nan and grandad. They have a new neighbour and he has made them virtual prisoners in their own home and I am really annoyed about it.

He has a dog that he just lets roam around in his back garden. It barks pretty much all day while he is out at work. They no longer feel comfy sitting in their garden as this dog is barking away disturbing them. It is very teritorial and growls at them when they go in their garage which is right next to the fence. When the guy comes home from work he takes it in.....but lets it out from time to time and it just barks until he opens the door to let it back in.

The poor pair of them are at their wits end. They cannot complain to the council as if they want to sell the house it must be declared as a neighbour dispute. They have asked him to do something about it but he says 'okay I will see what I can do' then does nothing. They just want to enjoy their garden in peace like they should be able to in their retirement. I offered to have a word myself but they said they didn't want me to get involved.

Anyone got any suggestions as to how I can help them short of kill it with fire/nuke it from orbit etc? I am thinking of buying them a series of sonic dog repellers and fitting them along their fence so the dog decides it doesn't like being outside.

Tried ringing the council for noise and/or pet control or something? If it's that bad.

That's just it mate, they seem to think that if they do that then they have to declare it if they ever come to sell the house as a neighbour dispute...I am not too sure about that being correct though

It's all down to priorities then - which is worse? Being afraid to go out the back door, or potentially, maybe, having to declare something if/when they sell the house. I know which I'd pick.

Not sure a noise complaint will go down as a neighbour dispute though plus if he is leaving it in the garden all day an anonymous call to the RSPCA might be in order. As leaving a dog out all day is cruel to the dog.

Well what else do you want us to tell you to do? A DIY poison lesson?

depending on which side of the fence you fall on, you have two options...

the dog meet car bumper option

or

a well aimed tranquiliser dart daily.

Put it in your car, drive it 10 miles away. Set it free. Drive home. ;)

I know someone that did that with a cat but ran it over on the way home somehow  :p :D

how ironic lol

That is true, they will have to declare it if they complain about the neighbour..as for the dog, I'm not sure....

Really, they need to speak to the guy and tell him that if he doesn't do something about it, then they will be going to the council. He may not like it, but it might make him do something about it.

Otherwise, give the local dog warden a ring. They'll be able to advise them on the steps to take. I don't know if reporting a dog would come into 'noise complaints' though you can certainly find out before it's registered as a complaint.

I know it sounds soft, but don't blame the dog. Crap owners make crap pets,
it's not their fault. :(

Edit: One other option is that the guy next door introduces them to the dog and they give it some treats over the wall - make it feel comfy with them. My dog rarely barks unless someone is near the back gate (we live in a Victorian terrace with high back walls and backing onto an alley) but as we introduced her to our neighbours, they just say 'it's ok, it's only me' and she doesn't bark at them all. She's just protecting her territory and if she knows it's someone who's 'allowed' she's ok with it :) Could be worth a go :)

If its just the barking thats the problem then they could try an ultrasonic collar if the owner is willing. If he isn't you can get a 'freestanding' ultrasonic gizmo to place in their garden.Google 'ultrasonic barking' or similar for suppliers

I'm impressed it took 15 posts to get to the old "kill it with fire" line :)

There's a noisy dog down the road from us that the neighbours contacted the council about as it was barking all day but for some reason they couldn't actually do anything about it, not sure on the specifics of that case though :(

As Berserker says though, which is more important? A "dispute" with the neighbours that has been solved is less likely to devalue a property than a constantly barking dog when you're showing people round.

The ultra sonic colars sound like a good idea as well, definitely worth a go before going to the council.

I have a nice Air Rifle (with silencer) if you would like to borrow it?

Then you can do a proper hitman job ;)

Could take a dog down no problems. :D

Or just kill it with fire.

Many thanks for that advice. I am going back round to see the old dears today and have decided I will pop round to the guys house for a chat.

About 4 years ago up to 8 neighbours chipped in and bought a noisy dog a collar that emits high pitched squeals everytime it barks. The neighbour accepted it, put it on the dog and it worked. It was quite funny listening to it bark, then it would let out a little yelp after each bark. After a while it was like half a bark and now it doesn't need the collar on. It only cost £17 out of the sunday paper but it worked a treat.

Similar to this - http://www.pestcontrolshop.co.uk/acatalog/VIATEK_BARK_STOP_DOG_COLLAR.html

And don't forget - you could also kick it in the ovaries.

Get a nice, juicy, bloody steak from the butchers.

Insert lots of PE4 into the steak.

Feed to dog.

Count to 10 and detonate.

There, problem solved.
