Friend of mine has a car that has been SORN'd for a number of years. It has a private plate on it which she would now like to put on another car. She never put the plate on retention. How does she go about doing this?

I've been told the car needs to be taxed and insured - does it need an MOT? It is highly unlikely the car will pass an MOT its been stood in a shed for a good few years.

As long as the car is registered in your name, you can still submit a request to put the plate on retention, regardless of whether it has mot or tax.

You will need a v317 form (you can download from here)

It does explain what you need to do in the form, but you only need an MOT if you are wanting to TAX the vehicle at the same time. In which case you will need said MOT, a completed V10 form and a certificate of insurance (+ cheque to cover cost of TAX).

If you are not the registered keeper or need to apply for a registration certificate, it is slightly more complicated but you may be able to just submit a V5C/2 with V62 (application for a vehicle registration certificate).

Failing that, speak to your local DVLA office.

Car only needs to be inspected if you are transferring a plate to it I think, but even then it is only under certain circumstances.

I just did it, and here it the advice I received from the buyer who is a car dealer on how to do it. Only difference was i was SORNing it at roughly the same time as transferring the plate.

I'd sorn it online (you can do this with the document reference number off the logbook at https://www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/app/sorn?execution=e1s1 )

Then fill in the enclosed V317 form;
1. Tick the retain box in section 1
2. Fill in the car details in section 2 with you as the registered keeper
3. Write "SORN'd 01/03/12" across the tax disk details part of section 2
4. Sign and date section 2
5. Tick the One Year box at the top of page 2, section 4
6. Tick the No box in section 4
7. Put me and my details as the grantee
8. Sign for me (anything you like, they don't care, just don't pp it) at the bottom of section 4
Pop the whole lot in an envelope with a print of the SORN confirmation and a cheque for £105 and post it to your local DVLA office.
That'll do it immediately and will save you a job to the soul destroying hell holes that are local DVLA offices!
