how to fix my screwed up android phone?

i've got a htc hero which i updated a few things a couple of months ago but since then it's been a complete mess.

i'd like some hlep as to what i need to get to try and get it back to normal.

this is details from phone so hopefully someone who knows what each is will be able to advise what of each i need to change and then what to...

i'd ideally like to start EVERYTHING from fresh but it's a lot to take in and i feel i'd miss something along the way which is why i've made this thread

Plug the phone in to your computer, and then run this - http://www.htc.com/www/SupportDownload.aspx?p_id=283&cat=2&dl_id=671

That will put it essentially back to factory settings, if you want Android 2.1/Froyo back on after that you'll have to re-flash it again.

That should work, if not let me know.

well i've been doing this all day and slowly getting no where. it took me ages to download the rom from htc as i'm on orange it wouldn't let me. i've managed to put 1.5 back on the phone but now i've lost the ability to use a customer rom.

i've tried installing a recovery image but nothing every seems to work. from what i can tell i need root access to install a recovey image, and to have root access i need to install a recovery image???

i've tried following the below guides as well as many others and getting no where

edit: well i think i'm finally there by using the below link. just installing 2.2 now so hope it's been worth it and my phone will be working as it should again

edit2: it's still not fixed. froydvillian installed but now it's stuck in on the loading page just forever replaying the loading video. all suggestions online say fresh wipe then install 1.5 but that hasn't changed it, well at least the wipe options of clear data/cache don't do it.

edit3: finally managed to get 1.5 installed by installing 1.4 first however it appears to have gone back to it's old ways. the main problem for me was the screen wouldn't turn on if i got a notification, the ball would flash so i hit either menu or end call and then the lights would go on and ball flashing stop but the screen would do nothing. so hit end call again and lights go off and ball flashing again. this would happen time after time until randomly i may get the screen to go back or i'd have to unplug battery and restart.
