I don't really know anything about classical music but can certainly appreciate it when I hear it and would like to give it a proper shot.

What is the best way to get into classical music? What should I start listening too?

My current music collection is mostly heavy metal kinda stuff so it will be some what of a leap.

Or better yet, find one on Spotify. Spotify has a huge collection of classical music available for free.

This set of Beethoven's symphonies would be a good place to start:

Or for a compilation, 100 classical favourites:

Spotify is unofficially banned in this house as peer 2 peer downloads and a online gaming doesn't mix very well. You don't want to see what a house with 3 game design students looks like when the Internet is playing up D:

I just orderd the compilation off amazon. If I really can't get on with it, it can always end up as a Christmas present for someone :p

What? Spotify is not p2p. It's streaming.

As for the OP..... very difficult to say. Classical music is a strange beast and it can take a long time to find a composer you really love. As recommended, get a compilation or listen to Radio 3 and see what sticks out.

Don't take recommendations for individual artists from this website. Just see what you like from what you hear.

Listen to classic fm and radio 3. Radio 3 at the right time is much better than classic fm, but tune in at the wrong time and you will catch a full mass, or some people talking ********. The presenters and listeners of Classic Fm are generally idiots, bt the music they play is consistently easily accessible classical.

Pretty sure I read that it works on a P2P basis. It certainly causes lag spikes when someone is using it that don't occur when streaming from youtube for example.

“Spotify uses a hybrid p2p system where music is delivered both by our servers and using P2P,” Andres Sehr said. “This allows us to deliver the long tail of music which may not be very popular, as well as quickly serve up the latest hits that the majority of users listen to. P2P allows us to both increase the speed that we deliver music and also lower the cost of streaming it.”

Unless they changed something since that article.

I'll give this CD compilation ago and might try tuning into classical FM. I shall report back after I've given it a good go.

Compilation is the best way to start, that's what I did and found various composers I liked and it all went from there.

I got into classical music via film soundtracks, Apocalypse now being an example, wagners ride of the valkriyes. I learned about classical music at school, and tbh i dismissed it as being old fashioned and nonsensical, (ignorance of youth tbh). Bit older now and able to appreciate it now for what it is, music in it's purest form, no electronic involvement. I had always thought of it as being music for very high browed intellectual types, ignorance on my part. But it is really nice once you get into it.

Read about different composers from different time periods. "Classical music" is just not one thing - there is so much variation between the composers. For example, if you like melodramatic music, check out Chopin. If you want something faster and more upbeat, Vivaldi is good one.
