How to get into the IT Industry

Well, I could be a dry stone waller, joiner, mechanical engineer or this. I decided this fit best with my preferred lifestyle.

Still have the other options + farmer now. What do you get to do that's so wonderful as you feel so sorry for us?

Just felt like being snooty then? "oooh, you poooor IT guys. It must be SO awwwful working like that" /stewie voice

From quick bit of OcUK detective work I suspect electrical engineer with stick firmly inserted up ass? :D Met a taxi driver like that once... :p

Oh no.

Mr Charles Montgomery "Monty" Burns if anyone.

So play my statement back in his voice and you would be closer.

From most episodes he's portrayed in he's the useless, senile, corrupt boss with a boyfriend. Ok, you called it :D (I'll give credit at ruthless).

All banter aside - management is fine for those that prefer to go that way. I tend to be a bit too interested in how stuff works/is put together/etc to be able to remove myself far enough. I'd much rather get better technically so my skills are valuable than go the management route.

My currently specialism is Oracle DBA. While my salary is fairly modest for the trade (still quite reasonable for my age) the very highest points of the skillset are currently commanding around £120k (contract) salary with 70+ being quite reasonable.

Now management wise, fine, you may still be taking home a far greater reward. Alternatively you COULD be a banker and keeping quiet so the rabble don't start complaining :p still, I'd rather keep the interest in the technical bits. It lends itself well to sparks of creativity that can lead to products and wealth by other means. My minds generally kept quite active and I have to puzzle my way out of technical problems rather than more political ones. I can do dealing with people too for the record, just prefer my line of work.

Yes, I've had the management option before too, technical is much more fun.

Call me dim but I really don't understand any of what you posted there...

Are you saying that you are really clever and earn lots of money??

Good for you.

I honestly hope you enjoy it.

It was a fairly balanced response to "oh you poor buggers that have to work /cackle". Take your highly elevated arse from the thread if there's not much you're going to add other than your (imo miss-placed) pity :)

(no malice there for the record)

IT never gets boring. You're always desperately trying to keep ahead of offshoring/onshoring/rightshoring to get a chance to be bored :)

EDIT: ACtually I should qualify the negative comments I've made in this thread. I started in IT in 1987 having left school without going to university. It has given me a fantastic career and excellent earning potential. I have genuinely loved many parts of it. I've done most jobs and am now in a relatively senior management position for an extremely large company. But times have changed and the world is different. I simply could not recommend my own children get into IT now. All I see is pressure, stress and people getting ill through it. Myself included.

I feel sorry for you IT guys I really do.

...there I said it again.

Hahaha 'company director'. I remember when I was a contractor and used to cringe when other people put that as their job title.

OP - listen to Housey, his experience seems to reflect that of mine. The people you get moaning about IT are generally the ones who got nowhere because they are rubbish. My IT experience led to some fantastic opportunities where I lived abroad for 5 years and I had some great times.

Well everyone's saying how bad it is... But i've been wanting to get into the IT industry fir years and years. It's what I want to do and it is where my skills are at. I've done a few different courses (4 years) to get IT qualifications... So i want to be in the IT industry.

I dunno about that.

If I wasn't being paid to do what I do, it's what I'd be doing in my spare time anyway. To paraphrase Blackadder; I'm fortunate that my job is also my hobby.

:)

Yeah I'd feel sorry for people with well paid jobs, often in an area that interests them that also tends to have flexible working arrangements and can be very cushy most of the time.

Yeah, sucks to be in IT.

Do shut up. :)
