Basically as in the subject.

Is there a player, like Apple TV or a console or some device that will allow me to play x264 mkv files of 720p or 1080p quality on my telly without having to attach my computer to it?

Thanks chaps.

Plenty of transcoding applications out there.

I doubt its possible to transcode h264 1080p in realtime.

Does anyone know if the snazzio can do this?

If you pc's up to it! I've transcoded 720p over wireless no problem, but dont have any 1080p content to try (nor a display capable of showing it!)

I can't even stream a 420p avi file without a bit of judder. My PC is up to the job but my network isn't. I can stream x264 files over cable but I've disable AC3 audio.

I'm using Trancode 360, what are you using to stream videos?

Transcode 360 combined with the Vista Ultimate media center. Compatibility was touch and go but it seems sorted now. I'm streaming over a wireless g network, through an exterior wall aswell.

I only really run in to trouble when i try and fast forward through HD streams and it just tends to fall on its arse!

perhaps a PS3 with linux installed might do the job?

expensive I know but you'll get a lot for your £400 here.

And void your warranty and possibly brick it.
I think the only solution is to use a HTPC, I don't know of any DVD-Video players that'll playback H264.

Arent any yet, pretty sure the only solution is 360+media center extender+decent network.

Just build a htpc, a 360 is going to require your pc being on anyway and wasting electricity transcoding video files.

Nope, the ps3 offically supports linux. And installing software on a console doesn't void the warranty regardless.

Assuming your h264 material is what we think it is i would at this stage recommend you consider the LOADS of WMVHD files that are in 720p with 5.1 and will work 100% with the X360 via USB, DVD discs or networked via media centre.

Look around for a few trailers/samples in this format.

I concurr, this is becoming a more and more supported format in the 'scene' (so i hear!) and offers a good solution, but you still need a 360/PC for it so it doesnt really make a difference :p.
