We have a 3 bed semi with an old baxi back boiler.

The house has had cavity insulation etc... and is mostly double glazed, having the heating on for 2 hours in the morning, and 4-9pm has served us well. but now its cold it really is freezing!

Whats the best way of heating the house? turn the knob on the boiler down and have it on all day. For the next two weeks we are both in all day, but normally we work 8-5ish.

There is no thermostats so I'm not sure what is best....

Our gas consumption has been very low so far, but I have a feeling all the credit we have build up is about to disappear... :-(

Start saving to have the CH changed I think before next winter.

in my (student) house the heating gets switched on if and when you can see your own breath in the lounge. up until that point you just need to man up/ wear a hat.

On a serious note, why not just have it coming on when it normally does, and switch it on if and when you're cold during the day?

We've got ours set to come on 6:30 - 9:30AM and then 6:30 -11:30PM, the reasoning being, outside those times we'll be asleep, at work, or dressed, so no excuse :p

Might be good to put to turn the boiler temp down a bit and put it on constant.

You could also buy a cheap £5 room thermostat and wire it in to the boiler. Most boilers will take one, just check if you need 2 wire or 3 wire.

We generally just have it on constant all day, and turn the heating on and off ourselves via the thermastat.

We used to have it on a timer, but the hot water tank would go cold, and it would take ages to heat it up again. A Gas engineer said it would be cheaper to have it on all day, as it costs a fortune to heat a water tank from cold, much better to have it always hot with the boiler clicking on for a min or two to heat it up occasionally.

looks like I need to get a thermostat then so I can leave it on constantly.

Just didn't want to spend any money when were saving for a proper ch system. but I'm sure I can wire one in.

I'd be happy with the man up comment, but tell my foot 2 9 stone girlfriend, who wears 3 layers when I'm in a t shirt! lol :-)
