So got a brilliant deal this morning on three Evo 870 4tb Samsung Sata SSDs for £69.99 each. With it been a market place seller thought it would be easy to get a refund. Initial impressions seemed genuine. Established account, high volume 97% positive feedback, positive feedback from purchasers of same items, nothing referring to fake SSDs.

So when they come from China, what am I looking for to make sure they are genuine?

Depends how much effort you want to go to. Ideally you'd run a variety of random read/write and sequential to test whether the performance is close to what the manufacturer claims.

Probably worth also filling the drive up to max to check capacity, and also trigger any errors in smart data (as this could have been wiped).

Brilliant thank you. I'll definitely be filling one straight away to check. Got Crystal Mark/Check installed It's "New" so packaging + Serial numbers should be a good tell as well.

how to spot, well £69.99 for a Evo 870 4tb should be enough to say yeh fake.

Even with an established account and very little negative feedback? (And nothing but positive for this item specifically. 77 sold.

Got good buyer protection so thought worth a chance. In my head it's unwanted bulk business purchase lol.

I've read up on it and there's even ones that fool Samsung Magician but ultimately it keeps re writing your data. What set alarm bells going is there's two other Chinese sellers selling at the same price. Doh.

Thanks everyone. Yeah it was the seller with 97.5% positive feedback, established 2020. Only 3 for that item, but all positive. Like was pointed out another 2 Chinese sellers on there with the same pricing structure and one has that negative review, didn't know this at the time.

I've tried to cancel with seller and ebay. So should hopefully go through. EBay says even if its shipped they will pay for postage back on my behalf.

What can I say, I'm not the same person I was this morning lol.

Well seller ignored my messages and Ebay delisted his page but didn't stop it being "dispatched" and they certainly didn't refund me.

So they are telling me to check back in on the 17th and any import taxes and shipping back they will pay. I also reported the other two sellers selling the same drives at the same price points... lets see if they do anything.

So get the popcorn ready as it seems likely something will be arriving, before it goes back. Photos will be interesting lol.

They probably want proof they items are fraudulent, but now I think about it returns were accepted on the listing so sounds more like a them problem.

in other news I woke up today to see a refund has been issued but no communication from the seller. If the drives do actually arrive we will investigate together!

I still think ebay is a good place to buy drives from. Just got a SN850x 4TB new OEM for £200. Brand new and 5 year warranty (registered serial number). But yeah lesson learned, would never buy anything from China like this.
