How to stop a kitten scratching and biting when playing

Hi, do any cat owners have any good tips as to the best way to stop kittens scratching and biting you when they're 'playing'?

My friend has just gotten a kitten and is having some problems with it being a bit over-zealous with the claws and teeth. She wants to know the best way to encourage it to keep the claws under wraps, and I was just wondering if you guys had any tips.

I've read about tactics ranging from crying out very loudly when it scratches, to a flick on the nose and a squirt of water, to de-clawing!! I'm sure the last one is very much a last resort but I'd be interested to hear what's worked for you.

Thanks.

any time our cat did anything not allowed it got a slap, simple. after a few it soon stopped :p:p

Doh. Just spent 10 minutes finding and re-hosting a copy of that.

Should have read the second page first. :p

1) Clip the claws to take out the sharp points. A pair of human nail clippers will do, but research on the internet and learn what the 'quick' is so you dont cut through it and cause bleeding.

2) Claws and teeth are all part of being a cat, however, you are a human and neither are sufficient to cause you serious harm. A cat backed into a corner will lash out with claws, but a cat at play isnt trying to hurt you. The secret to playing with a cat is No Quick Movements. Train yourself by tickling your cats tummy. It might bite at you, or grab you with a claws, but hold fast and Dont Pull Away. By doing this, you will learn the limits of how to interact with your cat.

3) Dont be a pussy......cat

De-clawing is NEVER an option - it's barbaric and cruel.

Biting and scratching is natural and most kittens grow out of it very quickly. I found with my two that a quick and loud "ow" followed by a tap on thier head got them out of the habit quite quickly.

Having said that, now they are both 5 we still have some cracking play fights and my arms often look like they've been dragged through a bramble patch!

I agree, thick jumper sleeve and a good fight with my cat Jinx is great fun...I clip her claws though but the needle teeth still break skin :p

tap on the head and stop playing. maybe even shout no

the slight downside is that since my cats will never ever scratch or claw anyone someone could easily walk off with them

declawing actually involves removing their toes down to the first knuckle. Excruciatingly painful for the cat and leaves it defenceless against other cats.

My 7 month old kitten Sam hates me and scratches me all the time. I was in bed, he walked into the room, and just slashed me across the eye. Lovely creature. He absolutely loves my boyfriend though. His claws never come out around him.
I stick to my lovely girly instead (Sam's sister). She's a doll.

As others have said.... it's a kitten that's what they do.

I found the best method with ours was to just stop and say no then once they stopped I'd continue.
I was told by someone once that if you want to tell off a cat you tap it's nose gently. It sometimes worked with ours so might be worth a shot if the stopping method doesn't work.

You dont need any special tricks or anything. The question you have to ask is how do they do it in the wild? Animals play fight all the time and they display an incredible amount of restraint. They are very intelligent, a stronger dog can have a tug of war with a weaker dog and the stronger will not always win.

Yelp/ouch noises, sudden aggressive respones and refusal to play are usually the signs that things have gone to far. If you indicate clearly enough then they will know that they are hurting you.

Man up, it's a kitten. kitten scratches and bites don't hurt that much in my opinion. I miss my cats playfulness, now she just hates everyone and only loves people when they have food lol.

On a serious note, just pull your hand away the second it does it. It'll soon learn that it's not fun. Chances are the cat is trying to play with you the way it would play with one of it's own. Just starve it of the attention it seeks by ignoring it. ;)
