I Am Not An Artist but if you were to render that again with global illumination or at least ambient occlusion turned on it'd look a thousand times better than the flat lighting you have right now. I assume in maya it's simply a case of checking a box in the render options and using the default settings I can't tell how you're lighting the scene - is it a point light or directional light? If you opt for global illumination you might get better results with a simple area light out of sight. It'll take a while to render (do it overnight or something) but should be worth it. Of course the render won't (shouldn't) count towards your grade but it'll look awesome.
Is that real wood flooring or laminate? Laminate is certainly cheaper and can be easier to source but it doesn't have the feel of a real wood and might be a false economy in the longer term.
