HP Microserver+XPEnology

As mentioned my own DS211J has been flawless at hibernation and WOL. I know that if you run more apps or services you might stop the HDDs from spinning down but I've not had that personally. As I have reasonably high bit rate 1080p, some AVCHD format videos and people using mobiles for PLEX in the house I have to run a separate PLEX media server (Ubuntu) for transcoding and unfortunately it doesn't sound like the N54L could replace that. And I wouldn't look at a 'Play' model becuase it drops features and doesn't do transcoding beyond the DS app that I don't use anyway.

Because I only need to a Synology for file serving and some apps I don't need much power so a £267 DS414J or £350 DS414 would probably suffice. Not sure where you are getting your prices from :p

Running a N54L idle and without proper WOL/HDD hibernation isn't ideal for me so I probably just need to give this some more thought. It sounds like it might be better suited for UnRAID, FreeNAS or OMV but that's not really what I'm looking for.

As I said the new synology nas
http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18623522 and that's the crippled one.

I think your best off staying with synology.

Is it possible to remove the default music, photos and video folders when using media server functionality?

You could uninstall those apps then delete the folders. But why would you want to do this?

Have just installed XPEnology version 5.0-4493 from scratch (first install).

Once installed, I could access folders from machines on the network, but the NAS had no connection to the internet. Couldn't ping Google and nslookup only returned the local gateway address. (So I couldn't download any of the packages)

The cause turned out to be where I had a second NIC card (Intel) installed. It will only connect to the internet with the LAN cable in LAN 1 (in this case the extra Intel card)

Thought I'd post here in case anyone else has the same issue.

Is this because the cards need to be bonded? (the intention of using two cards is to improve bandwidth)

Great info there dude ;)

Don't try and update to the latest beta as it unmounts the HDs. How ever you can update the apps you have installed.

I had to re-index my video folder for all of them to show up. The new mobile DS Video app
works great with my LG TV :) if only I could make it auto switch to 3D :(

Ok guys.. Got a crashed drive with 300 gig of data on it. The data isn't valuable, but I would like to try and save it. Is there any way of recovering it ?

Thanks

There is a how to on the synology site. You will need a version of Linux\Ubuntu via a another HD or USB stick.

Is it just one HD?

I'm up and running, updated with the above and not had any issues so far.

Probably should have got a gigabit switch though. Something I forgot about. :D

Nice one :)

I've got an incredibly frustrating permissions issue with sab I could use some help with.

I've just got XPE installed and got sab installed. Tried a test download and it was fine, extracted & moved to completed. Then I added a category 'tvshows' and tested again, now it says 'Cannot create final folder /tvshows/testdownload'

I've tried creating /tvshows and tried every permission setting I can find and it still fails.

Any tips?

you're best searching the synology forum. I use the built in downloader via the android app.

**** **** **** **** only just gone and put a 3TB hard drive in thinking it was one that I had just moved my films from ready to put in. It wasn't... it was another that was full of films. I'm just going to curl up and die now.

I've done that before now :(

The new 5.1 img is being tested but I'll still wait a week or two before updating.

I currently have the latest gnoboot on my xpenology, if I switch to nanoboot on the usb stick, will my drives be safe when I switch them over? I have most things backed up already but not everything as I dont have the space.

I would wait till then new version comes out. All you have to do is flash your usb stick and chose upgrade
from the HP when it gets to the nanoboot screen. Oh and download what version of Synology you need first.

Can anyone help me? I added some drives to take me to 4 x 2TB, which I crated a pool. I somehow deleted a volume (which was the 500gb drive I've got plugged in as the main drive I think). In doing so, I've deleted the system partition maybe? I don't know - but this is the end result; it thinks I've not enough storage to do an update. Everything else is fine, as in my drives mounted, working correctly...

I have a volume JBOD which is the 4 x 2TB drives running fine then a 5th drive which is 500GB and was the system partition.

Are you trying to update to 5.1 as it won't work as yet. Synology\XPEnology is installed on all drives but you have to have the USB plugged in.
