Easiest way to update 4.3 to 5?
Is 5 still in beta?
Hi
Just wondering if anyone has found out if the hard drives used in xpenology are viewable within windows when taken out of the n54l. As relying on software raid until I save up for a hardware raid controller. If anyone using EXSI and has found a raid card that is suitable to VMWare, if you could let me no which ones work that would be great.
Also again bit of a noob question, what are the commands I need to enter to edit the grub file to enable wake on lan, Ive looked at the http://xpenology.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=910#p4226 forumn but stuck on how to edit the file required.
Many thanks
Any particular reason why not to use esxi
UPDATE!
As per deuse's security suggestion, I created a new admin account.
But as a bonus, it cleared the red number one. Very satisfying
Might save someone reconfiguring their server just to clear that.
Well how pleased am i that i found this thread
I got a N54 last year to supplement an ageing Synology NAS box in an attempt to speed up my home network which consists pretty much exclusively apple kit.
I have limped along with the trial versions of Win 2012 server, which while apparently very powerful, was alway a bit too much of a compromise in all areas for my needs and never really sat well my apple household
Anyway after getting notification that my server 2012 trial was coming to an end soon i took the plunge and installed the XPEnology at the weekend, as a result my network is much much more stable - no more shares disappearing after waking my iMac's from sleep, no more missing appleTV media playback issues, i have Time Machine backup on all my macs across the network, and file transfer speeds a well up @ ~100meg/sec
Very happy with this solution - need to explore a bit more to make use of the extra power and speed that the N54 provides.

No update as far as im aware, the volume just keeps crashing on startup
Just a heads up but versions 4.1 to 5.0 are open to OpenSSL Heartbeat attacks. Synology has released patches for 4.3 and 5.0 but they've yet (when i checked the other day) made their way to XPenology - traitor has said he'll patch the 4.3 3827 beta release.
It is however possible to patch it manually, either by compiling the OpenSSL source or extracting OpenSSL from the 'critical update' patch - did the latter on a 4.3 3810 test VM and it appears to work, certainly passed Nessus' heartbeat test (tested pre and post).
It seems that hammering the drive with downloads caused the panic, moving the download folder seems to have fixed things. However plex updated and failed to let me connect until i redid the port forwarding
(Hopefully) a quick noob question ......
I am clearing my study / man cave out and fitting a new Worktop/desk this weekend and disconnecting all my PC / server etc
When I come to out it all back is there anything in particular I need to do to restart the NAS ?
Cheers
It would be a real shame if this proved to be the end of this project. It doesn't seem like it would be unsurmountable, but it is dependant on a single person willing to put the time in. But at least it is all working as it should, so not a huge deal.
Thanks for the update. You always do your research, so I'll follow your lead
