HP Reverb G2 uk release date?

Hi all, found this thread on a search about the G2 and have been watching with interest.

Those of you with System Active preorders: do your orders appear in the My Orders section of their website? Mine is absent. Could be because they don't initiate the order until release day I suppose.

Mine shows as 'Processing' under 'Orders' (https://systemactive.co.uk/online/my-account/orders/)

Incidentally, what's everyone's order#?? I initially had #1993 but had to cancel & re-order after I selected direct bank transfer which shouldn't have been there.

New no. is #2385

Damn, time to try their phone line again I suppose. I ordered on Saturday, #3611.

Interesting, that suggests only 3600ish pre-orders in the whole UK if you got that order number so recently. I wonder how many they’ll end up selling once it’s actually available. With the FS2020 publicity I thought it’d be higher, don’t know what I was expecting but a few thousand doesn’t seem like much!

Mine was already in the #2300’s ordered at the end of July shortly after the pre-orders went up.

2485 for me.

I don’t know that I am all that surprised. It’s a device that needs a 2k PC on top, isn’t out yet, and short of a couple of enthusiast targeted YouTube channels nobody has one. I expect most people outside enthusiasts don’t know it even exists. I have to imagine a lot of enthusiasts have already jumped in with the Index, and will be waiting for Valve to release an upgrade rather than switch to lesser controllers.

You’ve got a Quest out there selling like hot cakes, delivering a cheap and cheery Wii like stand alone experience and grabbing a lot of market. That makes sense, I’m sure the market for a console like price point is much bigger than the market the G2 is going for. If the upcoming PS5 required you to spend £2500 to get it running, it’d have a tiny market too.

I’d add that I don’t know anyone with a VR headset. I did used to work with someone who had the original Rift as a backer several years ago. It doesn’t seem like VR is very big yet, even with Quest. Granted, small sample size.

I'm very interested in a G2, but I'm not pre-ordering. Mostly interested for Flight Sim and that needs some patches before it's stable, let alone them getting the VR update out the door!

Valve owner here. At first I did not think much of the G2 as it has the same res as the G1 but looking through some of the youtube videos I was getting a bit of the green eyed monster yesterday.

I mainly play flight and driving sims so the headset is of interest however I doubt there is enough of a difference for me to buy the G2 aswell as my index. Better off investing the money in a GPU and cranking up the PD

It'll be interesting to see how good the sweet spot and lens glare is on the G2 compared to the Index. Edge to edge clarity with a large FOV are the best things about the Index lenses, but the lens glare is awful.

The FOV and large sweet spot was one of the reasons I went with the index as it is useful for combat flight sims. The early reviewers on youtube seemed to suggest that they did not mind the reduced FoV with the G2 after a while though.

Agreed the lens glare is terrible - seeing some of the comparison videos with the G2 made that pretty clear. The G2 uses lenses made by valve though so it would be interesting to know why they did not go with those in the first place? i would imagine they would not be giving their bleeding edge tech to HP.

Simple answer, because the index was targeting a larger FoV... as a result they use a more complex dual element lens arrangement vs the more simple single element lens arrangement of the G2.

In addition to that, the index released a year ago. There have doubtless been lessons learned and progress made since its release. Valve wouldn’t be likely to hold back tech from a collaboration, they simply aren’t in a position to even need money from hardware sales... they can’t make index fast enough as it is anyway. Someone buys an index, they win. Someone buys a G2, they win. Hell, someone buys an oculus hmd and discovers life outside the walled garden, they win. Literally the only thing that matters to valve is that more headsets out there = more VR software sales on steam, all of which contribute a juicy 30% to their coffers.

For those into their sims the VR landscape has never been better though... almost (f1 being the obvious exception) every racing sim has good VR support now, and I'm really looking forward to being able to run ACC at improved settings with a next gen GPU and the G2 - pretty sure it'll feel like a whole new game. FS2020 obviously is a boon to VR sims too, but so is the vulcan revision to X-plane and planned content/render graph engine for DCS, upcoming Normandy expansion to IL2 and so on.

I do admit outside of sims there is a bit of a dearth of VR content for the forseeable, or at least that we know about. I am looking forward to star wars squadrons but that's about all I can think of that excites me currently outside of the sims.

further to this I just found one more game I’m excited about!

Read this on another site. Anyone got any other news about these improved lenses.

Just received an update for my order from Bestware:

We would like to inform you about the status of your HP Reverb G2 pre-order.

HP has informed us that the Reverb G2 is currently being equipped with new, improved lenses in the production process. This upgrade will further increase the quality of the product, but according to HP it is accompanied by a slight delay in the initial delivery to all dealers. Based on the new availability date communicated to us by HP, we expect your order to be shipped by the end of October.

The guys with the preview units all seemed to mention that HP had told them the lenses were pre-production and had improvements planned for the final version, I don’t think it’s a surprise that the lenses were being improved.

There is probably a miscommunication or misunderstanding... perhaps the lenses have taken a little longer to finalise or manufacture or something, but HP have repeatedly said there is not currently a launch date other than “fall” so delay is somewhat subjective. The fact that the lenses were due to be improved however is not new news.

Definitely not pre-ordering this VR headset but definitely going to buy it once more defintive reviews on the final version are out.

Looks fantastic.

Quick question to you all learned friends out there, are you buying the headset with the controllers are using a different set of controllers?? sorry its a bit off topic

I have an OG vive, so already have base stations and vive wands, I am going to try the HP controllers but if I get problems in say FPS games then I have the vive wands to try as a backup, but then I am also planning on giving the vive to my son, so might end up getting index controllers, but again only if the HP controllers have serious enough issues that they wind me up
