I really like HSBC for online use, and while I agree that installing unnecessary software is a PITA, if something did go wrong, and I was held liable for not having their software it would be annoying.

I say use the software regardless, at least that way if anything goes wrong HSBC are liable.

And with the OP, exact same thing happened to me about 3 months ago. Was annoying yet good to know that they are so cautious.

Strange that I've never been asked to install this rapport software, might have a look - is it worthwhile installing? Does it provide extra security?

Try having a student account a couple of years ago. Never have I had such poor service and ludicrous communication.

They scrapped my overdraft overnight (depite promises it would step down) which left me around £1.5k overdrawn.

I found out that this would happen not via a formal letter, but via an article in the newspaper. I asked in 5 different HSBC branches and no one (not even the branch managers) had a clue what I was talking about - yet it happened.

As far as I can tell, all it protects you from is address spoofing, as long as you type in www.hsbc.co.uk manually rather than clicking dodgy links in your emails you will be fine.

With a malicious DNS server you can still be redirected to wrong place even if you type in the address.

Personally I have found their security checking woeful. Have had the same usenet account for years paid by cc every month and they have stopped payment 5 times, but have let a couple of dodgy transactions through. Got the funds back from dodgy but still a hassle.

Also ticks me off when the call you and ask you to prove your id.

Also the HSBC GlobalView is great, can view all accounts in more than one country and transfer between them nearly instantly ... don't know any other bank that offers that!

Same thing happened to me... I moved to their sister company, first direct - who approved a bigger overdraft than hsbc ever did and haven't had any problems since...
