Here is my reasoning. It may be different for other networks. I am staying with Vodafone as I am a brand loyal nub sometimes and I have had my number with them for about 14 years now (plus I contract for them and they pay me handsomely). :D

24 month deal.

£35.00 pm for 900 mins / Unlimited texts / 500mb. This equals = £840.00 over 24 months.

Or

Buy an unlocked Desire for £399.00. Get a Vodafone 12 month SIM only deal 900 minutes / 3000 texts / 500mb for £20.00 pm. £640.00 for the first 12 months or £880.00 over the 24 months.

Now my money would be on the Desire still being worth something second hand in 12 months, whilst being obsolete in 24.

Only an extra £40.00 over 2 years but to have the option of flogging an unlocked Desire at any time and buying another handset?

I am already on a SIM only deal so either are available for me.

Contract or SIM deal / handset?

You will probably end up in the same situation all over again next year?

Therefore, whilst you can, get the contract option, going for a sim-free phone next year if desired?

Can you not get a better deal from retentions?

I called sales today and and asked if they could match the quidco discount of £150 as their website was not accepting my email address. The woman said she would have no trouble offering me the 600min/unlimited text/500mb data on an 18 month contract for £27 a month. Surely they could beat that for a loyal customer!

Do you really need that many minutes and texts? I have gone with an o2 sim only deal, 300 minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited internet for £15 p/m. The only time I really call someone is if I need to call an 087/084 number, which gets charged separately anyway.
