HTC Desire Z passing under the radar?

Finally got to have a play with one tonight in phones 4 U.

Liked the way the keyboard snaps out and sits snug under the screen. I was expecting it to be more flimsy after reading bad things about it, but it was no where near as bad as I thought and can't see it being an issue.

My only problem now is deciding on the contract!

The best phones 4 U could manage was £37.50 a month (£102.00 cash back for throwing in any old mobile) 800mins, 3,000 texts and 750mb data on a 24 month vodaphone contract. (£800)
I don't think this was a bad deal at all!

Except I'd found this one online:
T-mobile - £30 a month, 500 txts, 600 mins, 1GB data. 18month contract. (total £580)
Or exact same as above but with unlimited texts £35 (£630 total)

Question is, are T-mobile any good or not? I've been with o2 for about 8 years if not longer so I've no idea!

Yeah, I'm probably going with MPD too... bit disappointed T-Mobile aren't carrying it themselves though, as some people in the Desire HD thread say that you get a 3GB internet cap rather than 1GB if you buy direct from them rather than via a reseller... :(

When the resellers first started doing this, you could ring up t-mobile and pester them to put it back up to 3GB. I'm not sure whether they would allow you to do this now though.

I *think* they've tightened up on this now as they've actually changed the T&Cs on the website to say:

Android phones bought in a T-Mobile store, over the phone or via our website, t-mobile.co.uk.

A few months ago it didn't have that wording so you could quote the terms back at them and they lifted the limit, from "unlimited" to "more unlimited".

Anyone's order still saying ready to dispatch from MPD? Been like it for two days, im guessing low stock.

Also little heads up for people who want a dock http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HTC-DESIRE-Z-...ories_MobilePhoneChargers&hash=item20b4e11289

It looks pretty good, think i might get one. All the others are portrait so this looks good.

I think i'm going to ring t-mobile and ask for them to swap some mins or texts for data, see what they say.

I phoned up my local Phones4U today to ask if they had a real one up and running for demo and they said that they did. Popped in at lunchtime and it was a dummy phone attached to the wall. Got a feel of the keyboard though and it seems fairly good although I would like to have a proper play before i buy it.

That's annoying. I'm sure that the 1GB won't be a problem, but according to the dudes in the HD thread you also get increased speed when you buy through them, which is very very cheeky if you ask me, I'm sure there's some consumer protection law forbidding discriminating between your customers like that. The problem is I have no idea how you would go about proving that you're not at the top speed - they could just argue that it's the reception in your area.

Just got it, great looking, can't really do much with it yet but seems good.

One question, why wont the homescreen rotate freely, maybe it's an option I can't find but mine will only go landscape when keaboard is down and portrait when keyboard is up.

Pre-ordered from Vodafone (upgrade) still not 100% sure If I want this or an Iphone...

Price plan: 18 months contract , 900 Mins, 3000 Texts
+ 750MB of mobile internet and webmail

Upfront handset cost - Free
£40 p/m

If you grab the speedtest.net app from the market you should be able to see if the speed is capped. If you're set up wrong you wont see speeds above about 380kb/s. If you call T-Mobile customer services and make sure they've got your phone down as a Desire on their system that should lift the cap.

Well despite my doubts about mpd i was pleasantly surprised! Ordered the phone on tuesday and it arrived before 2pm on wednesday, it got here before the 'your phone has been despatched' email!

Not had the chance to fully play with it yet so will report back soon.

Is that tried and tested? They do that even if you've bought through a reseller?

Hmm, I thought it was just a case of the data plan not being set up properly if you ordered through a reseller but this thread a couple of weeks ago suggests they might be doing it on purpose?

I can't say for certain as I've got the 3GB add-on.

It's not built into android to do that. I'm not sure if Sense has that feature but basic android does not, despite Moto droids/milestones doing it for a few days when first bought for seemingly no reason (this is verified on multiple phones and repeated by lots of people worldwide... no sense has ever been made of it!)

Well thats crazy, can't be that hard for them to sort out as it already does it when keyboards out, kind of strange that they have moved the usb to the side for landscape docking so hopefully a fix is coming.

Cheers
